What I mean is without changing PSU which card do you think is the maximum I should go for? I have one 6-pin so obviously will have to settle for using a convertor, are there any issues with using a convertor? Will there be reduced performance or somethin? I dont really mind limited overclocking potential as something has to be compromised.

See my sig for full specs.

6850 would probably be your best choice.

the 460 SE would work on that psu.. the 768mb or 1gb.. is ehhh iffy your cutting it pretty fine and couldnt oc it if it did work

as for the 560.. same problem as the 460 except its going to set you back significantly less (about 250 US dollars as opposed to 150-180)

the 6850 demolishes all nvidia cards in its price range when put in crossfire, even when the nvidia cards are fully oc'd. It is an excellent card for your money.

I'm assuming you have seen a benchmark to base that statement on? Could you please link me, I haven't seen 460 SLI vs 6850 Xfire review.

sure, here is a linkhttp://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3602/his_radeon_hd_6850_1gb_video_card_in_crossfire/index14.htmlWhen it comes to dual card setups, AMD is dominant. A 6850 CF matches/ beats a 460 1GB OC'd in SLI most of the time.

SLI/Crossfire is out of the question with a 450Watt PSU.

A GTX460 1GB would be okay, according to consumption charts at BitTech. A GTX570 is feasable too... depending what else you got running...

For some reason using the antec psu calculator, a crossfired 6850 with a i5 750 oc'd to 3.8 ghz would only use 430 watts. I don't know if the site is inaccurate, but it doesn't match te guidelines set by AMD for crossfired 6850's.

The 6850 just got a massive price reduction in my country and it is now the same price as 768MB GTX 460 and cheaper than the 1GB GTX 460. I cant really afford a GTX 470 or better and I dont think I can justify getting a new power supply for a GTX 460 when my PSU is adequate for a similarly performing 6850. And I dont want to get a PSU that's of a lesser brand or a 550W corsair, my next PSU will be overkill something like a 700W+ so I dont have this situation again but obviously they are quite expensive.

6850 will also make my system extremely balanced and I think I wont need to upgrade anything untill a complete overhaul sometime in 2012. AMD here I come, my first AMD/ATI card.:D

What resolution do you game at gambler_3.... Don't discredit the gtx 460 768mb... In sub 1080p resolution, its beastly of a card which battles the 6850 in this range trading blows with it. Sadly, its been overlooked by a good bit by its brother.

The 768MB version is on par with GTX 280 and about 10% slower than 6850. However we all know the overclocking capability of the GTX 460 and the only version available in my country is the EVGA superclocked one which makes it on par with 6850. They are effectively equal out of the box since the 460 is factory OC and 6850 isnt but I have always prefered more VRAM, the card I will upgrade to will have to last me quite some time.

I game at 16x10 and like to have 4xAA, I also ALWAYS use vsync and tripple buffering which takes up more VRAM.

But the real problem at hand is that even the 768MB version requires 2 6-pin. I have a sound card, quad core, 2 hard drives so I am not sure if using adapters is a good idea. My PSU is also 3+ years old so you see all the factors are going against the GTX 460 here.

Previously the 6850 was more expensive than even the 1GB GTX 460 over here and as I prefer Nvidia, there was no way I was even considering AMD. But now the 6850's new price gives me a new oppurtunity. I would have totally considered the 768MB if it required only 1 6-pin but as it is there isnt much difference in the price and power consumption of the 1GB and 768MB so if I go GTX 460 I might as well go 1GB.

Ok so googling for a few hours and it seems like the GTX 460's power draw is not much more than my old 8800GTS 640MB which I ran for a long time on my current PSU. Many people are running GTX 460 on their corsair 450W just fine, the maximum system power consumption I have seen with GTX 460 has been 330W which means more than a 100W headroom which is enough for overclocking and all. And ofcourse I can upgrade my PSU when I have the money.

So now what? It's obvious my PSU has enough watts and amps but I have one more question, are molex adaptors reliable???

stupid fanboys, then get the gtx 460 if you must have nvidia or play it safe with the 450, but the 6850 is slightly cheaper than the 1gb 460 and performs much the same as well as using less power. .

Sure. Many people will opt against using them, but as long as the wiring is okay (which usually is with the extensions that come with a GPU -but better check) you're good to go...

If you're tight on cash and on a budget, grab a GTX 460 1GB. I would recommend the MSI Hawk or Cyclone versions. For $200, it's an excellent buy. It'll play most games out there maxed out, with wicked fps. Down the line, if you ever feel the need to upgrade... you could throw in another one... or wait for a price drop on the GTX 580 or something. The GTX 460's are widely popular so you should have no problem selling it on eBay or what not when you do decide to upgrade to another model.

I dont like the fact that AMD drivers dont have individual game profiles, there's nothing else to it but a legitimate reason...

AMD and nVidia play it on the safe side when recommending power supplies, the consumer could be getting a cheap low quality PSU, they are rarely worth their wattage specification, or they could run some extremely power consuming hardware on the side. In either case, they don't want to take the blame if the system doesn't work. The Antec Power Supply Calculator used to be pretty accurate, seems like they have now included an extra margin in the calculations. In any case, I'd bet you could easily run a GTX 580.

If you get an AMD card, try installing ATI Tray Tools, it has got game profiles, and a lot of other nifty features.

I also have a q8400 Cpu and bought a 6870 last week its on the heels of a 470 and comes between the 5850 and 5870 performance but I don't know what the price of those cards are where you live.

But I really reccomand that card I bought a sapphire for about 215 euro and runs all my games silky smooth on 1920x1080 :) I was on the fence between ati/amd or nvidia nvidia's pro's the cuda that some games have amd's biggest pro is the intergrated soundcard when if you put it on a tv you won't need extra cables and hasstle for the sound.
