Yeah GW2 is in the works. It's slated for late 2009.
Still though, it will be worth it to play GW1, because GW1's expansion pack, Eye of the North, is going to have a feature where you can transfer your characters legacy, titles, status, fame and fortune, and glory over to GW2 when you start a new character. GW2 takes place 200 years in the future.
A WOW player like yourself, won't find the same strengths. GW has very few and rather boring items. There is a lack of weapon skins. The stats are very low capped. It means that after a couple of hours you can find the most damading sword in the game. For swords that is 15-22. 15 Minimum damage, and 22 Maxmimum. Of course you can find some with rare extra abillities and stats(like +5 energy) but asa hole the gear is weaksause.
The only way to get the few armors, is to buy or find or extract materials and go to a armorer in town who can craft them to you. No armor drops on NPCs like in WoW.
The layout in GW is simple. There is no Z-Coordination. Thats why you cant jump. It's the lack of height. you cant jump over hills. its linear. Still some of the areas are rather big.
Character customization is okay. but you can only be human. On the upside though, all the human classes look different, and also different in each campaign. Classes from Nightfall look African, Middle easteren. Classes from Factions look Asian, and does from the original looks European. There is a okay amount of hair styles and faces. No height/weight thou.
So what is the beauty of guild wars? It's the skills. collecting the skills is what is going to get you pumped. GW is the game for people who are looking for a real challange. the kind of people who wanna make their own kick ass build from a pool of 100s of skills and endless combinations with the two class system.
The GW fanbase is big, but is devided into 2 main groups. the PvEers and the PvPers. Thats what they spent their time on doing in the end game. In PvP guilds from all over fight for being the best in the entire world. In PvE people try to get titles, complete all the many missions, explore, finding perfect and rare weapons and of course trying to play the insane recently introduced hard mode.
Best time to start GW? I don't know. The game is just over 2 years now, so it will soon go into its "prime". its best year. long after GW2 comes out, people will still play GW1, because they can create their legacy from their GW2 characters while doing and achiving stuff in GW1. GW2 will also be radical different. I mean seriously different. In GW2 they are talking about no instanced worlds, a lvl 100 cap!!! and other stuff.
No doubt that many will stick to GW1. Just like many people still stick with everquest 1 or neverwinter nights 1, even thou the sequels are great.
Arenanet have said that they will continue to support GW1, and keep the servers up.
GW is awesome. I just started a new character and after a minute of getting to old ascalon, there stood many people in line to help give me starter money and help me do missions.
Unreal you have had a rough edges with many GW fans in the past. I urge you to check the game out someday. In fact I think that they will soon host a free weekend where everyone can come try the game.
Its so far away from WoW as it can be in many ways. It will take time and effort from a WoW veteran to recognize its strengths, and I am dead serious about that.
