Ultimate Doom. Pretty much perfect.mfsa
Crysis (Requires a decent PC though, but a $600 home-made rig should get no less than medium)
Rome: Total War (My first REAL RTS/RTT game, also Medieval 2 is good)
deus ex 1. best game ever made imho. its a tenner on steam now as far as i know.
also, if ure willling to dig around and put in some elbow grease, outcast is also well worth a look imho. its a bit jaggy and outdated looking now but its still a cracker. it also has one of the best soundtracks ever (not a great reson to buy a game but,,,yknow). i just mention the work bit because it has quite alot of bugs (u need a patch just to install the game) and u need software that will hog up ure systems resources (namely the CPU) so that the game runs properly. once thats done though, ive found to to be pretty stable.

hey yeah I remember Riven, yeah I'll go along with that ;) Wasn't the future society in that awful remake of the Time Machine with Guy Pierce completely ripped off the cliff edge village in Riven!?

YES, I know exactly what you mean! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I'm assuming you mean the Rivenese village on Jungle Island that surrounds a big lake. When you think about it though, if you're going to rip art design from something, what better is there than one of the ages of the Myst games? The Myst games have the best, most creative, most fascinating art design of anything seen in any other game, any movies, any physical art, any literature, anything at all.
I noticed that besides Riven, no one has mentioned an adventure game :(
A shame, because the adventure game did much to define the PC as a gaming platform. Anyone here want to name an adventure game as their best? Monkey Island? Full Throttle? King's Quest 6? Anyone?
I don't think I've completed any renowned point-and-clicks, Sam & Max Hit the Road aside. That said, I have played Maniac Mansion(this one just wracks my brain), one of the Monkey Island titles(don't remember which, but it definitely was old-school SCUMM with tons of words at the bottom), another LucasArts title involving Indiana Jones, Loom, a King's Quest title with a talking owl, and some others...I also think that I've watched other people play a bit of Full Throttle and one of the Space Quest titles. Maybe one of them will make my list if I were to get around to completing one. Oh, and I beat Myst, but that's not what comes to mind when someone mentions adventure games.I noticed that besides Riven, no one has mentioned an adventure game :(

I've already gone with Riven, but second choice would be The Longest Journey series. Can someone tell me how Syberia compares?
All time favourite text adventure - Zork 1, II, III (they were originally one game), though Leather Goddesses of Phobos was pretty good. and I like the Hobbit. Hell I liked all the text adventures!!!
For me it's a toss up between Deus Ex, Planescape: Torment, Thief: The Dark Project, or Half-Life.thanatose

I don't think I agree on that one... They're creative and fascinating, sure, but are the the .... (poop)? No. You can't beat books, because you can't beat your own imagination.
This comment of yours reminds me of an old Infocom ad with the headline "WE UNLEASH THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL GRAPHICS TECHNOLOGY.", and a picture of a human brain in the background. (A similar ad can also be found with the headline "WE STICK OUR GRAPHICS WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE.")I don't think I agree on that one... They're creative and fascinating, sure, but are the the .... My personal favorite is probably Fallout 2. It's the only game ever made where you can literally get caught up in a shotgun-wedding and then, subsequently, pimp out your wife.
