Starcraft 2 by far for both sp and multiplayer, you might want Shogun 2 also (pretty good multiplayer and active for now), DoW 2 series is fun but multiplayer isn't that great except Last Stand.
Starcraft 2 has a lot of hours in it. But the story is doggy-do. I like Company of Heroes. How good is that game! biggest_loser
I agree, company of heroes is awesome!
At the moment I'm really enjoying the Men of War games. My brother is playing Shogun 2 which looks great. I want to get Starcraft 2 soon also.
Really people? Starcraft 2?
What kind of strategy are you looking for? You want complex conquer the world stuff, large scale warfare, tactical small scale warfare, or "build more and better upgraded units than the other guy" strategy? There are lots of different kinds of strategy games.
Really people? Starcraft 2?xLittlekillxReheheally, the best and most active RTS created so far, easy choice actually ;).
Nothing wrong with Starcraft 2 :PReally people? Starcraft 2?

Starcraft 2 is absolutely nothing like shogun 2. Starcraft 2 is a "build base and pump out units" rts in the fashion of command and conquer, shogun 2 is a blend of grand strategy and large-scale warfare.
As far as unit-pumping rts goes, I think Dawn of War and Supreme Commander both handily crush starcraft 2 in terms of depth and awesomeness, but that's a personal opinion.I just have a hard time dealing with the total lack of scale in the units, and the beehive-like workers and ten minute long matches.
But you can't go comparing starcraft 2 to grand strategy games. They're just not the same thing.
So here's my breakdown of best strategy games on PC:
You want to take over the world, managing political and social infrastructure, diplomacy, weapons development and war: Hearts of Iron 3 or Europa Universalis 3.
You want a more accessible shallower version of that which won't eat your brain: Civilization 4 or 5
You want to experience the feeling of sending thousands of men to their doom in the name of your honor: Medieval 2 or Shogun 2
You want to lead a massive robot army across a scarred battlefield while laser cannons pump plasma into the sky around you: Supreme Commander FA or supcom 2
You want to experience the struggles of ordinary men called into service to become heroes for their country, and lead them to a hard fought victory: Company of Heroes
You want to do the above while having control over every aspect of each individual soldier down to the kinds of cigarettes he's smoking: Men of War - Assault Squad
You want to lead squads of supersoldiers across the galaxy to capture footholds in enemy territory and cleanse the soil of heretic scum: Dawn of War
You want to play competitively and you really like starcraft: Starcraft 2
Probably Shogun 2 Total War...or Starcraft II.
Company of Heroes looks good too.
And World in Conflict.
