Alrighty, I just got a new computer and finally have the capability to play some hardcore MMO's. I used to play EQ waaay back in the day around the ruins of kunark expansion and now when i go to look at EQ there are about 16 different expansions along with a whole new game, EQ2! Could someone explain the differences between these two games? Are they 2 entirely different games? Do they run off the same servers? Honestly, I searched the whole net for some info and found absoluetly nothing in reguards to the differences and such. Please help. THanks

everquest 2 is a reimagining of the original game, but they're completely seperate games and run on different servers

to bring you up to speed on everquest's development over the years - it became a hardcore raid game - remember stuff like naggy and vox? well there's entire pantheons out there now, more dragons and gods and snake-monsters than you can shake your sword at, and the loot pools are vast and beautiful - every new expansion comes with a handfull of raid zones, and there's a clear ladder of progression for raid guilds to take as they develop in the everquest world

everquest 2 is, yeah, pretty much a reimagining of everquest - there's many of the same concepts, most of the same locations (only two cities now! gah!!) and a similar feel - the class system was revised, the skill systems have been revised, it's more noob friendly and it completely lacks the lategame stuff that eq veterans are used to, but if you left at the kunark stage, eq2 may feel rather a lot like the eq1 you remember - really, the only reason everquest 2 came out at all was that world of warcraft was clearly spelling an imminent demise for everquest - and soe had to put something out to compete... it's pretty much a worse version of the same game, but with updated visuals and some slightly more refined gameplay elements

if you're looking to get back into mmoing, everquest 1 is the better game - it's about as hardcore as pve mmos get, and the capacity for character development is astounding (those 4k health warriors you may have been wowed by in kunark are running around with four or five times that much health now) and the raid game - while it would be a very, very long path to travel (even though a lot of it can be bypassed due to droppable items and stuff making it obsolete) - is well worth it

my experience with eq2 is very limited - but i would say this, if you want a raidgame, get eq1 - if you want a grinding/casual mmo, get wow or guildwars, and if you want a pvp mmo, get dark age of camelot or wait for warhammer online

i really see no reason at all to play everquest 2

if you crossbow a scientist to the ceiling in half life source they begin to masturbate vehemently

because they are totally hot for ceilings... i mean, who isn't?

i'm just sorry his arm was stuck bolted to the ceiling and he couldn't get his pants off to finish the job

yeah, i did it utterly by accident, i think it's probably the physics & ragdolling working in contrast, the gravity pulls the (free, unbolted) arm downward but then the ragdolling kicks in and it bounces back up, only to fall back down again

and hey presto! a scientist is rubbing one out directly above you... good thing that hazard suit protects against anomolous materials

good way to spend an afternoon!

Hey Thanks alot for the info, it helped me a hell of a lot in my decision making. I am looking for more of an in depth game that is not as much grinding/hackinslash like WoW. Have the graphics really improved since the kunark expansion? Also, the loot table you mentioned is vast. How is it compared to WoW do you think? Not sure if you have too much expierence with WoW, but im so sick of how limited it is. 4 races like 6 classes...ugh, i miss the old days with a bunch of diffferent spells and way more classes to spread them upon. Thanks again for the info.

a lot of textures have gradually been replaced, every character model got totally revamped with the luclin expansion and there was an entirely new UI created (so no more of looking at a tiny game image with a massive ui border around the screen)

i have only limited experience with wow raid game, but i can tell you this - its got nothing on eq, since we're talking about five billion expansions for eq, and 1 for wow, and each one is heavily oriented towards raiding - there's billions of items! there's a thing called magelo - which is essentially an everquest profile-builder and item databse, and then there's a thing called eqrankings, which is a profile database of the database - just spend a couple minutes browsing magelo profiles on eqrankings (you can click items to see their stats and everything is calculated correctly), and you'll see for yourself just how vast and diverse the items are - remember, eq was already four years old when world of warcraft started

whooaa. You helped out soo much man. I came to gamespot for the gaming forums, and was sorta hesitant  as far as making a first post like mine...you know how forums are sometimes, theres always that **** to get to your post before everyone else and totally knock you down for your lack of expierence. I am really excited for trying EQ again. You have helped emensly on helping me decide, and I think EQ is where I need to be. By the way, What are you currently playing?

i don't play MMOs any more - i quit in 2004 after deciding i'd had enough with high end raiding in EQ (i loved it but it was just taking up too much of my life), i tried the wow beta for a couple weeks, realised it was horribly mainstream and just quit entirely

i'm playing a few random games like company of heroes and rainbow six vegas

as far as MMOs go, i'm waiting on warhammer online - the large scale pvp seems like a refreshing change of pace after the grind-a-day stuff of previous MMOs, though i don't know if i'll actually buy it... it just seems interesting

good luck with EQ, it's a really amazing game - if you ever find yourself playing on the fennin ro server, look up my buddy zhorro, he'll help you out any way he can... if you can find him

I was thinking of doing an RP server, but correct me if im wrong.. but there was only one RP server back in the day (fironia vei?...or something) and xp came substantially slower there. Is that still the case now? Do you have a server recommendation for Central US (Minnesota)? RP preferably, but what are your thoughts on the different kinds of EQ servers...come to think of it...what kinds are there now?...oh oh! one more thing,, I heard rumors EQ is strictly PvE is this true now?
