I am assuming you are looking for an active following of a game so it doesnt die? Get tf2 in that case. The game is $20 and is worth hours upon hours of fun because of how mature the community is. If you want a better deal get it with the orange box for $40 and you get 4 other games.

Yes, and Counter-Strike as well as Counter-Strike: Source both have great players and both are well worth the money.
