I know they all practice together, but in tournaments isn't everyone fighting for themselves? Or does the team as a whole get the prize money?

You've never been into sports have you? Do you think there's just one driver or one car in like formula 1 for each team? Who do you think is most likely to get a sponsorship, a singel person or a team of loads of very good and professional individuals?

Because it make very little sense to play other game than 1 vs 1 on higtest level, unless map allows common defense (which usually it doesn't)

My brother plays S2 a lot, and have an excellent team most of the time (good players coordinating their action thanks to skype). 95% of game ends fter early rush. They just take zerg-terran (with quickly mae speed upgrade for zerglings) combo, spam zerglings and marines and win.

They attack in 3 on one person. If it is protoss, he is usally dead, beacuse of fast lings. If terran has walled-up - marines just make a gap in wall, zerglings go through it for builedrs( same for protoss walls). Any help from other players can be easilly killed as it is usally 3vs1 or 3vs2 at best. Cannons can be overcomed by 3 vs 1, and in case someone has build raallya lot of them, they just change their target.

Countering good teamwork rush is night imposible - few games last more than 10 min. They lost only few times against some master-level players, who sacrificed their own partner, and attacked their bases somehow managing to kill my brother's team faster than they killed them ( the doomed player was using any kind of delaying tricks he could). In other words - in teamplay attacker has a big aventage.

The team gets sponsorship and advertising.

Training in a team is much tighter and efficient than training on your own.

It's just the same as living with 3 roommates will save you money over living on your own. Sure, a 3 bedroom house or apartment is more expensive than 1 bedroom or studio, but if you split the 3 bedroom cost 3 ways, its actually cheaper. Also why buying food in bulk is cheaper than buying individual. Being on a team cuts the costs down. Besides sponsors don't want to put all their eggs in one basket with one player. It's much safer to sponsor a team where there are likely to be at least a few good players that will earn some recognition i.e. advertising for their company. There are many more reasons why teams are better, but I don't have the time now.

This... They have their own rooms based in what area they are in (the larger teams that is). The group as a whole get the sponsorships, advertising. They also have good people mostly on a equal level to practice with.

It's simple. People don't get sponsorships, teams do, with the exception of WhiteRa (Duckload) That being said. Teams train much harder together, what do you learn from laddering? Squat! You would have to play a thousand games to learn one strategy perfectly from each angle on one map during ladder sessions. In a team session it's normally done in 40-50 games. Without teams the scene wouldn't even exist, or we would watch a whole lot of mediocre players.
