What's your favorite PC SciFi action RPG?

Hi everyone, I've played the standard fantasy RPG's for years and am a little burned out on those, but I still love the RPG genre. I'm wondering what Scifi RPG's you guys really like, something with a good story preferably but not nessecary. I have Win 7 mid range setup if that helps. Thanks.

Edit: Somehow forgot about KOTOR. Easily my favourite Sci-fi rpg of all time, not so much action, but it is definitely my #1 Sci-fi game.

Mass Effect is definitely the first one that springs to mind. I'm thinking of playing through ME 2 again now.

Am probably gonna have to go with Deus Ex.

That's easy, Mass Effect Franchise hands down.

On a side note i could never get into Dues Ex: HR and after playing it only for an hour i put it down, after i beat Saints Row 3 i'm jumping right into Dues Ex again and giving it another chance, i think i'm going to enjoy it this time around.

Well, besides the dozen or so games already mentioned (Fallout 1, 2, 3 and NV, Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3, KOTOR 1 and 2, Borderlands 1 and 2, Deus Ex 1, 2 and 3).

Oh, and the spy thriller Alpha Protocol.

Oh, and a bunch of classic PC titles like Wasteland, Blood.net, Sentinel Worlds, Megatraveller, etc.

Oh, and some modern indy titles like E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, the Star Wolves series, etc.

Oh, and upcomming games like the new version of Shadowrun.

Oh, and a bunch of MMOs like SWTOR, Eve, AO, Fallen Earth, Hellgate, Star Trek Online, etc.

I wouldn't call either of those RPGs. Great games, but not really the same genre as games like Mass Effect or Deus Ex.

I agree. Using Mass Effect as a benchmark for anything "RPG" is a huge stretch. Then again, the term "RPG" has been so abused by developers and gamers that is has become almost meaningless. It seems EVERYTHING is a RPG these days.

well if you claim Deus Ex to be an RPG (i call it a hybrid) the n System SHock 2 should be in the list aswell, especially since they pretty much share a ton of things in the RPG department.

The first Mass Effect is decent as an RPG, the others are decent games, but I can not bring myself to call them RPGs.

I would toss in the Fallout sereis aswell (strictly they would be parralel timeline sci fi apocalyptic dystopia, in setting, but you know)

I would suggest looking into Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines, it is not Sci fi, but set around nowadays (well it were set in 2004 I think still, as far from fantasy as you can get with the exception of Alpha Protocol).

Koror is in without any discussion what so ever.

Ofcourse I consider the Deus Ex to be able to be in the list aswell (but like SS2 it is more of a hybrid)

How depressing it may be, I can not really think of any other games right now, that might fit.

I don't really consider fallout to be scifi, and I barely consider deus ex to be an action scifi rpg. Kotor is fine. Borderlands i don't really consider scifi (it might be scifi but it isn't the kind of sci fi that i think of when people say it) mass effect... ok. The classics ones you named aren't very actiony. Upcoming games don't count... MMO's are often not good, especially the ones you mentioned.... So yeah...

Post-apacolypse is a category of sci-fi so yes Fallout is sci-fi whether you think of it as sci-fi or not. Handheld laser and plasma weapons, nuclear powered cars, and raditation mutated monsters are all science -fiction- last time I checked. Same goes for Borderlands.

How is Deus Ex not action sci-fi rpg? Real time combat, detailed upgrade system, non-linear gameplay, side missions, detailed story with branching dialog choices, cyberpunk setting, character development. The character development in the DE series is way more detailed than in the ME series which you said was "ok".

Whether you personally think those MMOs are good, they all pretty much fall exactly into the cagerory the op is asking about.

Albion. It isn't an action oriented RPG though.

Mass Effect 2 for its super fun combat. (though the 1st one was less "streamlined" and way more immersive.). Dead Space 1 is space-horror perfection. (haven't played the newer ones.). Deus Ex: HR was wonderful and since it didn't get hyped as much as some other big box titles,really floored me with how good it is! (And not to be a jinxy-jinx-it Johanne but a certain Polish game developer who made a game that rhymes with -- oh, let's say The Zitcher Voo -- is working on a sci-fi title. /happy dance.)Fire_Wa11

What the h*ll am I thinking? I only forgot every one of my favorite sci-fi RPGs in my first post. (Starting out a new year stupid is no way to start out a new year.) So, yes, the above games are great. I'd also throw in the mind-f*ck that is EyE: Divine Cybermancy as I did play that one for over 100 hours but my all time favorite sci-fi RPGs would be:

1.) City of Heroes

2.) Fallout: New Vegas

3.) Fallout 3

Nothing really scratches that itch for me the way those 3 did. Other games are games but CoH and the newer Fallout games are almost like a meditation, combining excitement AND relaxation. I hope something else comes along that mesmerizes me like those did. And not to be a Snarky-Trolling Santos but to the person who said Witcher 2: that is a fantasy game, not sci-fi action.

Its very old and the combat system downright sucks but the story and characters and humour (one of the funniest games ever) absolutely make up for it.

And did I mention that you get a freaking planet as a companion? And that your mouse cursor is a character? Seriously, Anachronox is brilliant.

Ah, yes. Perhaps I'm not starting the year off that stupid. I initially included ACTION Sci-fi RPGs. Not to be a Troll-War Travis but City of Heroes, Eve Online, FO3, FONV, Kotor, etc. are not what I would consider to be action.

I should maybe tack Borderlands onto the above list but I would like it better if more of my friends were gamers. I would also perhaps add DC Universe Online which I initially thought was one of the most underrated games of all time until I got to the end where it turns into a frustrating gear-grind. (F*ckin' SOE.)

BG has realtime with pause combat too, would you call it an action RPG ? . It's not like you can manually block, or move out of the way at the last second. You input the commands and the cpu makes the dice rolls. Just because it's not turn based doesn't make it an action RPG. An action RPG plays like an action game, or a shooter say. Games that rely on character skills/stats instead of players skills/reactions aren't action RPGs.

Fair enough, but I don't completely agree with your last statement. Some combination of skill/players reactions make up the best action RPGs. Deus Ex 1 handled this in a really interesting way by making your character really innacurate with any of the guns that they don't know how to use unless you hold still for an extended period of time. The combination of real first person control plus character development is something I'd love to see more in games. Besides the Fallout 3 and later games, Alpha Protocol, and Deus Ex it might also be worth mentioning Vampire Bloodlines. Not a sci-fi game per se but it's a straight up action RPG in a modern, non-fantasy urban setting and is based on a rich pen and paper RPG.

I answer the ops question by giving them all the info and letting them decide for themselves. I get what you're saying about a post apocolyptic setting not being what a sci-fi fan might be looking for but I'm not going to presume to know what the op's preference is and these games do technically fall into that category. Deus Ex isn't a stealth game because stealth is not required, it's merely one way you can choose to play the game. You could run and gun the whole game if you so choose.

You know I saw that game on GOG today and thought it looked interesting. Picking it up soon for sure.
