Personally, I like those good ol' big cardboard boxes. Yes, they take lots of space but I think they have a certain charm... I dunno, I just think they look cooler than DVD cases. In Europe, we've had DVD cases since around 2002 and it still kinda pisses me off. :P Anyway, whaddya think?

Edit: No love for big cardboard boxes? :(

While there is a certain charm to cardboard boxes with their flaps and huge cover arts, I like DVD cases simply because they're sleeker and fit in better with the rest of my collection. Besides, the games that come with cardboard boxes tend to be kept in either jewel cases or those infuriating paper sleeves. Jewel cases are bad enough (mine always seemed to get cracked sooner or later) but those paper sleeves are terrible and just scream "packaging was an afterthought".

I perosnally prefer a nice tin/aluminum box that a few games have (collector's edition).

It makes it seem more attractive to me.

After that, I like the Small cardboard box, it is just that the manuals are shrunk down from the large cardboard boxes >_<

I'll take the DVD case. When you own 200+ games it is easier to store them with DVD cases. I hate jewel cases the most.

Retail box, it would be the DVD case design. Will also take games in digital distribution too.

In my preferred Order it's,

  1. 2. Small Cardboard - 'I love the Big Boxes but after awhile they took too much Space.:P'
  2. 5. Digital Distribution - 'Now that Cardboard Boxes is mainly a Memory of the past I only get my Games now days from DD. (Steam,Impulse, etc.)'
  3. 1. Big Cardboard
  4. 3. DVD
  5. 4. Jewel
-

Damn I guess I'm the only one who likes big boxes the most. :P

I really liked the HUGE manuals we used to have. Plus the maps/posters and all that extra stuff. More bang for your buck, you know?

I prefer older games anyway, I always get a nostalgic feeling when I look at one of those boxes. But ah, I guess that's just me then. I have to admit though, my shelf is gettin' really full.

I think that Big box > Small box > Jewel case > DVD case > digital distribution. I hate digital distribution, though I can see why some people would like it - it's just not for me as I love to collect stuff.

I like the small cardboard boxes because they are nice boxes. I hate the recent large bulky plastic boxes, but DVD cases are a nice alternative.

I prefer the big cardboard boxes aka Blizzard battlechest style hehehe :)

However medium size cardboard boxes are nice too, such as The Witcher enhanced edition with the dvd cases/manuals slotted inside, kinda like the style some movie/TV dvd collections use.

Bring back the big boxes of my childhood! Man, those were the days...a big box, complete with the game inside a jewel case and a nice, big manual (sometimes in color, too!).

Best package has to go to Falcon 4.0, the original release. Came in cd envelopes inside a giant binder with a 1200 page manual!

I remember a good cardboard box. I think it was Joint Strike Fighters. It was like a narrow trapezoid, almost like a triangle. Now thats good marketing!

"Hey, how do we get people to buy our game?"
"Make it a good one?"
"Ya, I suppose so, but..hey, I know!"
"What?! Tell us, please!"
"Lets take our box, and shape it funny!"
"That....that is just plain crazy"
"Crazy like a fox!"

And thus the trapezoidal box was born!

Big boxes ftw! :)

The best one I have has got to be Civilization II Collector's Edition:

It's 1.5-2x bigger than the normal box, it comes with the game cd, two cds with scenarios, a poster (like with all Civ games), instruction manual (200 pages), instruction manual for the bonus scenarios, registration card, tech support manual and the official Primagames strategy guide (400 pages)

Digital Distribution, don't have to think about where my games are anymore which is useful. But if it was in a case then a Big Cardboard Box, especially if it's a CE like Guildwars NF.

Your Deus Ex box must be the US version then, mine is Euro/Finnish. US boxes always were much cooler than what we had in Europe.

I still have a load of games from when they came in big cardboard boxes, even when there was little inside them apart from a jewel case and a thin manual :) Small cardboard boxes aren't available in the UK, though from pics I know what you mean. I can remember when games first started coming out in DVD cases, and I thought it was quite strange. Now it just seems so normal, and is nice that they aren't all irregular shapes and sizes. My current favourite though is the steel-book - the metal DVD case. They just have a nice solid feel to them, and are much hardier than a standard plastic DVD case. Baldur's Gate was a unique game though - large cardboard box for the game, but inside had a folding cardboard sleeve holding all 5 discs . I also just got a copy of The Witcher Developer's Edition, which came in a fantastic large boxset. I posted pics of it in another thread - HERE (pics are a few posts down) :)
