it seems like games still use engines like the unreal engine, source and the engine from cod is still the same. i am just wondering when we are going to see a huge leap in graphics? are we gonna have to wait for the new consoles to come out? or are games like rage gonna be the next gen of pc graphics? thanks guys!

Look at Shogun 2 total war, Witcher 2 look to push the boundaries. If you are jsut looking for something a significant leap over Unreal and COD then go play modded Crysis, there is practically nothing that can touch it.

Yup. :/

If a dev can't make a game on All platforms (excluding Wii, they get their own neutered versions) due to graphical limitations guess which platform gets the short end of the stick?

EDIT: I should have said 'due to hardware limitations.' Graphics aren't everything. I truly believe the next big leap in gaming will be greater emphasis on physics.

Games can keep getting prettier, but if my rocket launcher still simply makes a decal of a scorch mark when shot at drywall I'm going to facepalm my hand through my head.

prob not until the next gen consoles come out unfortunately. game companies are making their games for the lowest common denominator (consoles)....then they just port it over to pc with high res graphics.

Next consoles. However, devs can still implement things on much grander scales on PCs when it comes to graphics, physics, etc. as long as they are willing to optimize. It's just that the devs have to be able to get games to work across such a large scale of machines and kicking dual cores out the door would be a bad move at this stage. It would be interesting to see what the average level of performance of GPU is installed in most computers with dedicated graphics as well.

I think for these days, recommending anything beyond a Geforce 8800/9600/GT 240/GTS or Radeon 2900/3850/4670/5570 to get "console parity" for multiplatform games at 720p is ludicrous. I would still expect better texture filtering, LOD, framerate too.

We'll see it when some developer has the balls to release a game only for PC designed to push a 6970 but can scale down to a 6850 and doesn't care about making as much money as he/she can out of a poor console port. In other words, not anytime soon.

That sounds pretty terrible. That is not a broad range at all.

Exactly the point. Free from older hardware.

I think there needs to be a fundamental jump that's bigger than what we've seen before. It's been mentioned before, physics will jump, we are getting damn close to looking pretty realistic, but if the physics sucks its just gonna stand out further. There's something called uncanny valley as well, once we get close to the drop off there is no point in continuing until graphics can overcome it. It's why Avatar took so long to develop and release since its inception. If things seem less realistic even though they physically are better graphics there's no point.

Are you going to be the one who pays the developer for all the money they would lose by just having that tiny range of computers that could run the game?

Does it really matter? We're 2 generations ahead of consoles anyway, only when a new console comes out will pc graphics improve. Unfortunately consoles have ruined pc games forever, lazy ports and the like

yeha and like u said the sad part is a lot of people in here in the GS PC HW forums has rigs that are years a head of a console heck if you compare we all mostly hold a PS4 or a X-box 720 or better.

also like u said to bad console games just runined PC gaming forever consoles are holding PC with gaming back.

thats why one of my goals is to learn how to use the unreal engine SDK, Valve SDK Hammer. and Soft Image. Learn it good enough to get a team together and pay them at least something from my job im working right now and make PC only games. heck if my goal hits and does come true ill make console version but the consoles will be SO different then the PC and the PC will always offer more.

like DICE did with BF:2 the PC version was better and the PS2 and X-box was toned down version of the PC version.
