Just wondering about that question. I haven't de-fragged my hard drive at all since I built this computer in August last year. I have a Western Digital 1 TB hard drive with 7200 rpm. Also, I won't lose any data or anything at all right, such as save files for games or just other stuff? Thanks!Gamerperson33
That depends on how often you install/uninstall programs and/or create/delete files.
For average use, I'd suggest doing it once a month.
[QUOTE="EliteM0nk3y"]If you have Windows 7 there is almost no need to. With my laptop that i have had since Feb 2010, I have never had to defrag it. It always stayed at less than 10%.MakariWin7 does it automatically on wednesdays at 1AM if the PC is ever on then, too!
I always put my PC to sleep when it's not in use. Unless I'm downloading a game (slow internet). I defrag whenever my PC gets above 10% fragmented, which can be a couple months.
Hey guys thanks for the replies. I have Windows 7 and I checked my Disk Defrag program and I analysed my disk and it said 17% Defragmented in parenthesis next (C drive). Is that bad or good? And I also checked my schedule and it said it runs at Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. Gamerperson33
I've heard you want to defrag if it's 10% fragmented or above.
This poster is right. Fragmentation only occurs when your constantly deleting/re-writing files on your drive, which causes some files to be split to fit the contents of the drive - that's where de-fragmentation comes in, which physically moves these files to no longer split them, thus reducing access time. So to the posters who are saying its crucial to do it weekly or what not, it really isn't. Monthly may be acceptable due to general deletion of files etc. That depends on how often you install/uninstall programs and/or create/delete files.

This.
It isn't necessary but windows does it anyways.
Every day at like 1am, I leave my pc on, there is no reason not too, the analysis takes like 30 seconds and then like a 10 second defrag. Also Nailed you are wrong, NTFS frags up so bad, if you just installed Windows it is really fragged up, or installed lots of programs, lots of small files, it sure will be fragged up a lot. It's good that Windows defaults to once a week. So you can just leave it alone TC.JigglyWiggly_
Once a week is not necessary.
Reading through this made me think. Windows wont automatically try and defrag my SSD will it? Or does it know not to do that?
Havent noticed it trying to but thought i would check anyway.
You command Windows not to do it.Reading through this made me think. Windows wont automatically try and defrag my SSD will it? Or does it know not to do that?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's a need to defragment SSD drives at all, so I don't think Windows would do it autimatically. Since they don't use spinning plates, they don't store the files in different "sections" of the files. They are more like huge flash drives, which makes them fast to access, because they don't need to locate their files in different areas. Again, will appreciate if if someone corrects me and I'm wrong!Reading through this made me think. Windows wont automatically try and defrag my SSD will it? Or does it know not to do that?

Based on what information?Windows can detect SSDs and will not auto defrag it.Reading through this made me think. Windows wont automatically try and defrag my SSD will it? Or does it know not to do that?

They still collect clutter, defragging won't help though, here's a wiki extract:Because low-level operation of SSDs differs significantly from traditional hard disks, the typical way in which operating systems handle operations like deletes and formats (not explicitly communicating the involved sectors/pages to the underlying storage medium) resulted in unanticipated progressive performance degradation of write operations on SSDs. TRIM enables the SSD to handle garbage collection overhead, that would otherwise significantly slow down future write operations to the involved blocks, in advance. So yeah essentially defragging won't bring back lost performance on SSDs.Reading through this made me think. Windows wont automatically try and defrag my SSD will it? Or does it know not to do that?

EDIT: I would like to point out I have scheduled weekly backups and defrags. But once a week is hardly "necessary"

i hate how defrags occasionally make shadowprotect explode on the incremental images edit: and yes, this has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion at hand :DPlease Log In to post.
