think of any 3 games that have been crazy popular in the past... what do they all have in common? nobody plays them anymore. the cold truth is that all games no matter how popular, and no matter how widely played, will die and never be played again by the masses.

so what about World of Warcraft? its become one of the most widely played games (if not THE most widely played game) of all time. and lets face it, even people like myself who can't stand almost any form of an RPG still enjoy playing WOW. but like all other games out there, WOW as we know it will lose players, lose popularity, lose support etc. whether it be due to the graphics being outdated or just that people have nothing left to do in the game (which most people who have a life still have plenty to do in wow at any given time), possibly just the fact that the fundamentals of the game will get old with time (for instance, pressing a button to do something and then waiting for the computer to do it for you).

one way or another, the game will die, but then what? there isn't anything that really has the feel that wow does, warhammer is basically wow with a few twists and turns but set in a completely different universe and cant really be played how you want it in every respect like wow can be. same goes for every other wow copy cat.

so what will happen to wow? will they just make a sequel and hope the players of the first wow to switch over to the sequel after they spent they're time on something completely different? will they just upgrade the graphics and add expansions every few years? or will it become one of the "classic" games that nobody plays anymore?

P.S.

i didn't mean to say that warhammer was a bad game or purely a wow spin off. i just prefer wow.

please post comments, thoughts, and opinions

Hmmm.... I suppose they will make a new MMO. Hopefully a starcraft MMO. I think that would become even more popular then WoW. Im sure I arent the only person who is sick to the back teeth of fantasy based MMO games.

It definitely will not die soon. There are several new expansions planned, the next of which involves the Emerald Dream. I am so psyched!

never said it'd die soon. and unfourtunately blizzard won't make a starcraft mmo till wow dies due to the fact that it would lose players to the new mmo and it wouldn't get all the money that it could have if they just milked wow dry for all its worth.

wow will never die. if u think about it, even if blizzard does lose a lot of players they will just join servers together to make a server with a lot of lost players still play. i am hoping if they do make another MMO i'm hoping that there will still be support. i use to play i haven't played in about 6 months.

It will not die... they will always add content to it... and when the graphics become so abysmal that people start to notice... they will probably have some sort of graphics overhaul (make the game look better, but it will still be the same game)...

I dont know, man, experience tells me otherwise. I can think of a lot of games that were popular quite a few years ago that are still fairly popular today.

As long as the community is there, the games will be played. This is especially true for PC games as the community can, with the devs/pubs's permission, sustain the game, mod it, patch it, and enhance it.

So ya, while no one is playing Halo and even Halo 2 any more, there are a good amount of people still playing Starcraft, Diablo 2, Fallout 2, Sven Coop, Counterstrike 1.6, Team Fortress Classic, and countless others. Enough, at least, to have a respectably active online community with enough servers to keep me happy.

Death comes to something that can be forgotten. In this case, I don't think anyone will ever forget the world of warcraft, so it probably wont die just soon.

actually its death may be sooner than u think after all they cant actually do anything more with it the lich king is dead (supposedly) so there cant be any more enemies. oh wait right because lich king is the only one with a story they can do whatever they like because WoW is an MMOG not an MMORPG because it gives you no role to play (in the grand scheme of things, except for WotLK but by the 2nd expansion the point of the first two has become useless). so who knows u might next have to fight fishmen in mystical battlesuits of unfairness which would make sense because they havent provided a story to it. so it will die out the second everyone realises they can go no further with it and the PvP has become repetitive it will die out in say mm a year meybe 2 it will become like everquest there but not really worth remembering.

The game isn't going to die. Hell the original EQ still has people playing.

Like it or not, WoW has nearly perfected the PvE MMORPG formula. It appeals to nearly every MMO gamer with its easy of play, depth, and unique art style. I hope it never dies. As much as it is a massive force in the gaming world, it is also probably the biggest achivement in the video game world.

WoW is a sorry excuse for a game. It involves no skill, and is a huge grind of time. At no point is it fun, its just a growing addiction. WoW will be killed by another blizzard MMO.

You know you are probably talking about 99% of the games on the market o.o . How do someone get the best items or turn good in a game? None where like "GOD" when they first started to play a game. They played alot with time. Do wow require skill? Nah its like all games all you need is time.

Saying whether World of Warcraft will die is like a Jedi looking into the future. The dark side clouds everything. Blizzard in this case, clouds everything. Blizzard are masters at the art of extending the product life cycle of their games. Where a franchise would have died out years ago, Blizzard still keep pumping in content in their age old games to keep them popular.

But eventually the ONLY thing on this planet that will end World of Warcraft is World of Warcraft 2. Diablo 2 and StarCraft have huge player bases, but once their big brother counterparts enter the markets this year, there will be no reason to play the oldies anymore when your favourite game will be bigger, better and recieve a graphical revamp.

Therefore my voice on the mater is WoW cannot die unless Blizzard intend it to, with the release of WoW 2 (if it will ever be made). Blizzard have saturated the MMO market with one product, which is simply extraordinary. It's like Microsoft, the only thing that can dent it's full monopoly power armour suit is an attack from the inside of the business, whether intentional or on purpose. Blizzard control the very lives of every WoW subscriber out there, and only they will control WoW's fate and its 11.5 million subscribers.

WoW will never die. Period. I mean it might get to the point where Everquest (1) is right now, where the majority of the players that are playing it are the dedicated ones. EQ was released in 1999, and still has a playerbase, and is still running, and is on its 14th expansion. As long as Blizzard makes decent expansions every year or two, the game will never die.

I think already trying that with 3d graphics in next patch but needing 200 dollar glasses! I'd say they'll just make a wow 2 in a few years.

The only time WoW will die is when Blizzard makes another MMO or when a different developer actually takes the amount of time necessary to make a game better than WoW. I don't even know if Blizzard could kill their own MMO with another though. I feel like this game still has AT LEAST a few years left and is continually growing in its number of subscribers so it's all but dying out right now. In a few years the number of players may start to die down but I feel they will remain strong for a long time, at least until someone takes the time to release a good MMO instead of a botched one. In the end I don't think it comesdown to graphics and a lot of people like the "cartoony" feel to it. Mario is still super fun to play on the original NES and that has terrible graphics. WoW will last a long time.

Wasdie
Sorry, I have to disagree. What WoW has nearly perfected is the appealing to the masses formula. The way they've created their PvE content takes the enjoyment of the MMO community to the casual gamer... which is a feat in its own right, but all it really does is improves blizzard's ability to make money, not create epic PvE content.

Isn't it the same thing though? Appealing to the masses IS perfecting the PvE formula; it's making something everyone can understand and enjoy, not the people that need to waste part of their adult lives to understand.

Not really. Stephen King is an author that's read by the masses, but it's not because he's an amazing writer... it's because he knows the formula to make a story that people will buy. Great PvE is about blending originality with challenge, fun, and replayability. At this point in time, blizzard is just rehashing the old formula, and making it more accessible to casual players.

do you people not listen they finished artahs's story in Wotlk which means they cant make another expansion just release new content via patches. so until they go really on the side of impractical abstract ( much like they did in burning crusade) there not be any more expansions, theyve finished there pathetic attempt at role playing.

i played it for 4 months then threw the game into my fireplace to be used as kindleing im sorry but grind and self motivated goals in an MMO are simply sorry excuses for being uninventive blizzard is simply ripping ppl off by messing with them psychologically. a door to door salesman follows the same tricks but do you see him getting votes NOOOOO.

if Evercrack can die, so can wow.CheddaBumpz

That's funny since EverCrack didn't die.

MMOs have an incredibly long lifespan. Just look at Meridian 59, the first MMO ever created and that's still going on since 1996. Ultima Online just passed its 10-year mark and it's still alive. Might not contain the subscription numbers of what you consider to be breathing, but it's still kicking.

As long as the games keep pulling in profit, then they will run indefinitely, no matter how small the subscription base may be.

Tabula Rasa was never able to achieve 150,000 subscribers and dropped well below 100k after the beginning of 2008, so I don't think it successfully pulled players in. And I'm not sure if you've played it, but it wasn't quite up to snuff and I didn't see much innovation in terms of gameplay. It was touted as a WoW killer prior to and after initial release, perhaps that was the reason why it failed.

Earth and Beyond was the only game that was any good before EA pulled the plug.It just didn't have the subscription base to back up expenditure.

the "death" of a game (MMOs in this case) is almost an impossible thing if you consider the "death" of a game to be when nobody at all plays it anymore, or when the company loses more money than it gains each year from keeping the servers up, and knowing blizzards support for online gaming (even starcraft is still "alive" and gets the occasional patch every now and again). but really.... when was the last time you saw any living person with half a damn life still playing any of those games mensioned be people above this post?

Well, WoW might not die but lot of people will leave once Starcraft 2 and Diablo III come out. Perhaps WoW won't be played as massively as now, but it won't die completely.
