I'm not looking to have the best system around, I just want to play games at decent framerates. I just got myself an ATI X1650 Pro card thinking I could pretty much run what I need to. Time after time again I've had one gamespot demo after another fail on me in some way. Some won't launch and some just crash to the desktop. It is my card or are the demos flakey? This biggest issue is if a demo craps out on me, I WON'T bother purchasing the game. I already had to deal with that and Battlefield 2. I don't think spending 3 hours trying to get a game to run properly is worth the time anymore.

Usually demos leave a sour taste in my mouth... but what are your other specs? Maybe there's a reason for all the demos crapping out...

A demo is good way to find out if you like the game play but is usually not as stable as the full release. You just happened to try it with BF 2 which kept getting broken in early stages of release. I don't believe the GPU is the single problem to all your crashes. Also you should be able to get a decent frame rate considering I was able to do so with lowered res and some lower settings on a older 9800 pro card with a 2.4 P4.

Actually yes LockAteid. Between working full time, running my own business, playing in a band, and volunteering...I don't have much time to fiddle with these issues.

I'm with you all the way. I hate when companies release buggy demos - I almost never end up purchasing a game if I am not impressed by the demo. Why would a company ever release a buggy demo? It makes no sense to me. Any ideas?

Hey super-busy-guy, PC gaming isn't for you. You have no idea what you are doing, by some miracle you got the new video card in, and now it is quite obvious the problem isn't the demos but your system.

"Oh my god every demo fails on me!!!!!!!!! Why do they make bad demos????!!!!!"

If every demo fails for you have you ever thought that just maybe it's your computer failing?

Do you have the latest drivers? Did you uninstall the old ones? What kind of memory do you have? How fast is your processor speed?

I guarantee I could play every demo first try that you have been struggling to play.

Yet you had the three hours to fiddle away trying to get a single demo to work.

50% when a game doesn't work or run like it should its because of the person. ether not having the proper updated drivers or just screwed up there system. the other 50% is when the computer's specs can't handle the game but i think in this case its a little of both.

(1) reinstall Windows if you haven't in the past year, or since you upgraded your GPU (2) update all drivers (3) update your DX9 files (go to www.microsoft.com to get the needed DX9 files) (4) post any error message you get when this happens, or go to the Event Viewer (Google if you need more info on that) :)

Its really your decision to get the demo into working order or not. You're right, sometimes its not worth it. Demos are basically garbage anyways, watch some gameplay movies instead. So I don't know what to tell you. PC Gaming is a hobby and if you're not up to speed with what's gong on, you are going to get stuck in a rut. If you really want help, then ask for it. Otherwise, what do you want us to do? Feel sorry for you? Okay, I do.

Sure, PC gaming can be a chore sometimes, with all the hardware and software complications. But when you get it all working, it can be so rewarding. Even though I'm going crazy trying to keep my computer playable, the thought of giving up PC gaming has never even crossed my mind.

I understand what you're saying man. Tweaking settings to get things working right is not as fun as it once was, when I had all the time in the world to do it, which is why I'm migrating towards consoles for gaming. But yeah, working on an issue for 3 hours is never fun, it might be your setup that's screwed up. Might be your CPU? Or OS, not sure.

What you describe is not normal. Also, this isn't the hardware forums.

Also do research on your hardware and game specs before you run out and buy them. I always do before any upgrade to make sure I don't waste my money.
