Topic title says it all. When will USB 3.0 become the "norm?" Will we all be using USB 3.0 in the near future? If so, how many years will it be from now?

I mean it isn't like we have to adopt some new technology. Newer 1155 motherboards have up to 8 usb 3.0 ports with 2 2.0 ports. As far as I know if it works in USB 2.0 it works in USB 3.0, just faster. Unless something like Light Peak (aka Thunderbolt) becomes a new standard. That would require some change. However, transfer rates are nearly 3x that of USB 3.0.

So, it would be smart to make sure the hardware you upgrade to does have USB 3.0 compatibility? I notice that the new Sandy Bridge motherboards are really pushing for USB 3.0. I was just curious as to what I should look for when upgrading and USB 3.0 popped up in my mind.

If you are asking what type of motherboard you should get then yes, get sandy bridge (LGA 1155). USB 3.0 is a plus, but shouldn't be a deciding factor. It is pretty much a standard on newer boards. There really isn't a reason to not use USB 3.0, it just gives you faster USB ports. For example if I transfer files from my laptop (USB 2.0) it takes about 5 min. Transferring that same file on my desktop w/ 3.0 takes about 20 seconds.

Oh wow. That's a huge difference if you ask me. Thank you for your response. That helped quite a lot.

Well 1-2 years sounds about right for me. That's when I'm looking to upgrade. Yeah, I also expect 2.0 to hang around for a good while. LOL. That's a funny vid. Thanks for that. haha

IMO, Thunderbolt will be as mainstream as firewire. ie: Only used by professionals etc.

Depends. Intel released Lightpeak or whatever for the new Macbook Pro's as an alternative to USB. They seem to be pushing hard for it to become the standard.
