That's a Graphic CHIP for a laptop... You will not be able to purchase one separately to my knowledge. They are usually soldered directly on the laptop's motherboard during production.

It's quite common to find a discrete video card in a laptop if it's got a high end GPU. If the TC has an appropriate MXM slot, there's a good chance he'll be able to swap out his laptop's current card for the 580M (assuming he can find one).

I've found one on Ebay for ~$750 USD after shipping. There's also one at RJTech.com for $800 in what I'm assuming is USD. I've never ordered from the latter site before, so I don't know how reliable they are.

Plenty of laptops have removable GPUs. Sager, Alienware, MSI, etc. all make laptops with MXM slots.

TBH, I reckon it'll only dramatically go down in price when it becomes obsolete. A while back I helped a buddy replace his laptops 9600M GT with a ATi 4650M, and the OEM video card cost a good $150 on an auction on Ebay; this was a good one and a half years after the launch of the 4XXX mobile cards. :?

MXM cards are hard to come by since they release them to manufactures in limited amounts only when the machines are built.

MXM Upgrade has a decent supply whenever they can get ahold of them. Obviously these things are insanely expensive. I had to do an update from a ATI 9600 in a Dell XPS Gen 1 to a 9800 Mobile which went fine.

to a certain i completely agree with you in terms of price but you can honestly build a mediocre desktop for 800 bucks! also the trade-off is you get to take your pc anywhere. But ya you should see the M18X is a behemoth of a laptop so I they have more than enough space. They also told me the processor could be changed but it is wayyyyyy too costly

Medicore ? You can build a tower with a quad core processor , $100 motherboard, 8gb ram, case with three fans, 80+ certified 550w powersupply, HD6970 video card, 1TB harddrive and dvd drive for around $750........ (I could cut $200 easily off the price and still make it a mid ranged build that can max almost every single game at 1080p......) Don't see where your getting mediocore from

With a 6970 no problem (there might be only 1 or 2 poorly optimized games that it CAN"T max) Not only that but over 90% of games in the last two years will avg at least 60fps. As for the $200 statement, you could go with 4GB ram and drop to either a gtx560/HD6950 and still max almost every single game at 1080p (if you don't believe me and go read any benchmark)
