It would have to be top 10 for me. I finally got to play it last night on my PC since buying it back in August 2001. Little did I know that my computer would not run it. Luckily enough, I held onto it and pulled it out last night and tried it out. The computer I have now that I got in 2006 plays it perfectly. I did have to get a patch for the sound because of Vista, but the game plays great and it one of the best games I have ever played on PC. I bought the sequel for Xbox back in 2004 and that was a great game also.
Max Payne was my game of the year for 2001 .. and this among competition from the likes of Valve's Half-Life Blue Shift, Monolith's Aliens vs Predator 2, and Gray Matter's Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
It would most likely make a top ten list of mine if I was to actually sit down and contemplate what one would look like .. hard to say .. I have quite a few games that reached the 9.5 mark for me on my own personal rating scale.
I remember being so empowered in that game .. the gameplay was so second nature to me, I tore through that game like a master .. was so good I got through 70 percent of the game on the New York Minute difficulty setting.

Wouldn't even crack my top 100. I vaguely recall it as a mediocre game with an over-used, gimmicky bullet time component and not much else.
I combine Max Payne and Max Payne 2. They're essentially the same game. They would be in my Top 10, maybe even Top 5. I loved the idea of a really good single player story.
Max Payne 1 is awesome, but Max Payne 2 is the gem of the series. I wouldn't know where to rank either, because I don't have a list (should get onto that), but MP2 would probably be up there, maybe top ten. Best third person shooter I own, best linear action game I own. The game is so slick, and the story told so well.
My top 5, no contest. There has yet to be a 3rd person shooter that even comes close to its greatness, with the exception of MP2. MP2 was pretty fantastic, but it wasn't dark
enough, and didn't have as much style as the first game in my opinion.
Too bad the movie was such a letdown, though. It showed a lot of promise in the trailers, but didn't really follow through.
Maybe top 5 but for sure in the top 10. PC version of course. All games should be made for PC first!! then watered down for the lowly consoles not the other way around
I played this quite a while after it's release and can't remember being as enthusiastic about it then as some peoples are even today. I think it was the first game with the bullet-time effect which was spectacular but has since been done better by other games. As i remember it, the only other things it had going for it was the tormented main character and the attempted sense of style incorporated into all aspects of the game (that often succeeded but sometimes did not). It's worth playing but I don't think it would even make my top 5 pc-shooter list..
I'd definitely put the series in my top 25, probably in my top 10. Just the mood and setting alone made it worth playing. With good action and excellent gameplay, it just got better. The bullet time feature was so well received, it seems that almost every shooter since then has some kind form of it, making Max Payne a very influencial game as well. Think I'm going to install it again, haven't played it in a while....
