http://www.gameology.org/files/images/250px-Quake4box.jpgQuake 4 developed by Raven Software

It took me to play Quake 4 again to really come across how satisfying the shotgun in this game really is. If you are looking for first person shooters that has a fantastic shotgun then I recommend Quake 4.

http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/01856/media/half%20life%202.jpgHalf-Life 2 developed by Valve

Certainly a favorite among shotguns in a FPS.The ability to have a secondary fire to burst two shells on a target was indeed very gratifying. However, what Half Life 2 did really well, was the hit feedback from the shotgun that made it quite satisfying to use.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Doom3box.jpgDoom 3 developed by id Software

Lets face it, id is well accustomed to developing fantastic shotguns, granted they are the pioneers from a FPS pov. Doom 3 delivered well in that regard of a great shotgun in a FPS this decade.

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/left4dead/images/1/11/Left4dead2cover.jpgLeft 4 Dead 2 developed by Valve

Though I have only experienced the demo version, the Shotgun(Spas-12 Combat Shotgun) was essentially unforgettable. I have never picked up a shotgun in game and felt the share power from not only the look, but the fire feedback and audio feedback. In addition, exposing your enemies anatomy was too satisfying.

http://images.swaptree.com/images/vg/11/636311.jpgHalo: Combat Evolved developed by Bungie

"Dumb down consoles shooters should not be on the list; Halo was just another FPS - OoSuperMarioO is a heretic!"

With emotional ego put to the side, Halo CE was a phenomenal FPS buds. To make it short, Halo CE shotgun(M90) was indeed developed fantastically. Having the opportunity to not only fire at your targets, but the melee ability made for multiple moments of laughter and gratification with the M90.

http://www.freakygaming.com/gallery/game_art/crysis/cover.jpgCrysis developed by Crytek

There are few FPS that has actually offer the on the fly depth with weapons, and that's no other FPS but Crysis. Players had the choice to customized the shotgun in however they desire, resulting in many variables. Would love to see more FPS utilize a similar structure.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/teamfortress2.jpgTeam Fortress 2 developed by Valve

I despise the achievement updates! However, I must say, I do admire the new weapons. One weapon update that has had a lasting impression was certainly the Force of Nature(Double-Barreled Shotgun).

The Force of nature offered new ways in gameplay that was never experienced before in a FPS; From the force feedback on the Scout when firing to help navigate within the environment, or the share speed of swiftness made it rather satisfying to easily make this list.

My vote for the Developer that has constructed the most satisfying shotgun in a FPS this decade will be Valve's Left 4 Dead 2 Spas-12 combat shotgun. I honestly believe there's not a single FPS fan who wouldn't awed at the look and functionality of the weapon, lol...

I don't know if it counts as a shotgun, but the flak cannon from unreal tourney 2004. I loved the abilty to bounce shells off walls, ground, etc. The secondary fire feature of a grenade launcher wasn't bad either:D.

I also loved the shotgun from FEAR and Medal of Honor Allied Assault.

On the list, I'd have to say L4D 2. It's like shotgun surgery on some zombies. Buggers just won't die.

Off the list however, I'd say Rainbow 6 Vegas. I just love the feeling when you swing a shotgun around cover in blindfire mode and blow someone away. Epic.

Please tell me this is some sort of sick prank. The shotgun in L4D2 being the best?! I have never used a shotgun in a game that sounded so fake, weak, and felt like I was firing a toy. If you want to see how a shotgun SHOULD be, go play Killing Floor. No game I have played comes close to really projecting the POWER of a shotgun like Killing Floor has.

OoSuperMarioO

You must play some hardcore tennis games or something because

THIS,

does not sound like a tennis paddle to me.

On the other hand, the *pchew* noise of all the L4D2 shotguns sounds like 2 metal pans being struck together.

Hardly captures the essense of a true shotgun.

That and the fact that it takes about 3 shots to kill anything really dwarfs the feel of the power a shotgun is supposed to have.

Whatever game that allows you to shoot two shells at once. I was disappointed with Stalker Clear Sky, because of that. Think the original Stalker was minus that function, too; but it's been too long since I've last played that game to remember.

My vote goes to F.E.A.R, nothing beats blasting a guys arm off in slow motion and watching the guy flail around with blood spurting all over the place

my runner up is Borderlands, some of the shotguns are fantastic in that game, especially the ones with explosive elemental damage, they all feel really good though

I think I would go with the SoF 1 shotgun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK6lzBuPoEg

And of course the decade before that, there was Doom 2 super shotgun, which is still the best shotgun ever.

man, people on page 2 already suggested FEAR shotgun, that was surely the best.

i wonder if this one counts, there is Goliath (vehicle) in Battlefield 2142 Nothern Strike. the driver seat comes with mounted shotgun that blasts enemy from quite a range.

FEAR and Crysis imo.. Doom 3's sucked.. Half-Life 2's shotgun is the best designed gun in the game, but the game has pretty weak gun mechanics.. Never played Quake 4 though.

Fallout 3 had a satisfying shotgun, or maybe it was just V.A.T.S + Bloody Mess Perk that made it awesome. Some of Borderlands shotguns were pretty sweet, like the corrosive ones, that would dissolve your enemies into a mass of goo. :D

Vote against Crysis shotgun, that gun was just weak, especially compared to the SCAR and FY74 in that game. Also vote against Half-Life 2. It sounds weak, and was not as useful as the magnum.

Some of the shotuns in Borderlands were sweet. 12 to 20 round drum ammo holders and no cocking after each shot, one or two blasts to the face with one of the high level ones would kill almost anything.

L4D1's autoshotgun is probably the most satisfying shotgun I've ever used in a game. The sound of it, the look of it, the feel of shooting it, the feel of shooting at stuff with it, how effectual it is on its target. The pump shotgun is pretty nice as well.

My second favorite shotgun ever would have to be the Clarke in BF2142. Very accurate, but the pellets became weak at range very quickly to balance that. Being a support cIass weapon, you could spam shots with it as much as you wanted if you needed to, and you could beat out anyone using any other kind of assault weapon if you used it right. Before the buff it got, it was too slow firing to run and gun against anyone with an assault rifle or the Lambert Carbine, but the trick was to get behind a corner, pop out, shoot, pop back in, rinse and repeat. Assuming he was even quick enough to hit you when you popped out, it minimized the damage he could do to you by only letting him shoot at you while you were shooting at him, and as long as your aim was true, no weapon could compete with the shotgun shot for shot. Even the best players were thrown off by this tactic pretty often, which made it such a fun weapon to use well.

Borderlands probably has my third favorite shotguns ever. Most of the shotguns are too inaccurate for my liking, but the hunter shotguns with ~70 accuracy can be pretty devastating with how many pellets you can easily put into enemies' heads even at a moderate range. They could have a little more bang to their sound, but they still feel pretty satisfying to shoot nonetheless.

FEAR probably takes fourth place with its shotgun. It sounds a little weird, leaning a little toward the "hammer" sound of the Doom 3 shotgun, but it's a highly effective weapon with a tight enough spread to always be effective at the range I want to shoot it at, and is nicely effectual on the enemies. And you can freaking turn guys into a cloud of blood with it! A cloud of blood!

Oh! And how can I forget Serious Sam's pump action and double-barreled shotguns? I wouldn't say they're amazing as weapons in the context of the game as they're best for smaller engagements usually while other weapons are for the heavy combat, but they are super satisfying to use for the situations they are intended for, so they're definitely among my favorites.

Fear easily. Slo-mo+shotgun = epic bloody win.

Plus it holds 12 shells, 4 more than most shotguns in most games. That means 4 more shots to aim at a replica soldiers face before I have to reload. And its the go to weapon against those damn ninjas.

The shotgun in fear is without equal.

I think I have to go with the SPAS-12 cole from FEAR... that thing was freakin brutal O.o

runner up will have to be the SPAS-12 from STALKER, I dont get why people say shotties are useless in that game O.o just point in the general direction of thebaddie, and watch himvanish.

the Q4 and D3 exp shotties were nice aswell ^^

last noticable one is the Benelli M3 from CS:S finally shotguns were useful in Counter Strike :P

The Flak Cannon primary fire is the most destructive shotgun I've seen in both single and multiplayer. Then is the Painkiller Shotgun/Freezer gun, and the the double barreled Resurrection Of Evil (Doom 3 expansion) shotgun; this last one had the appeal of the slow reload, so most of times you ended playing with your life in a single card.

Crysis shotgun (based on the Benelli M4 Super 90 http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh19-e.htm) is very good in single player, with the nice features of multiple scopes and the swich chokes to reduce/enlarge the cone of dispersion of the 7 pellets BUT -and is a very big but- pales in the multiplayer against the efficiency of the SCAR and FY-71 assoult rifles, that made more dps and are good at all distances + much larger magazines and faster reload.

So, my vote would be for the Falk Cannon in "fantasy" shotguns and the F.E.A.R. in the "realistic" ones. Is not that F.E.A.R. combat shotgur were very different from Q3A, Q4 or Crysis ones, but the size of the maps and specifically the corridors makes the F.E.A.R. shotgul lethal in both campaign and multiplayer.

I guess they don't use proper shells. There are three types of shotgun ammo in Stalker...

Why the hell nobody votes for Painkiller's shotgun is beyond me.

Left 4 Dead 2's shotguns are OK... they feel weak at times. Killzone 2 (I know, not a PC game) had the most satisfying shotgun this gen, imo.
