for me i prefer non mmorpgs.beginning i thought its cool but slowly it isnt..just plainless grinding and no plot or anything.

except for guildwars.

i feel many games are going into mmo.

to me it isnt a good thing.

although my friends disagree with me..they love mmo and said that rpg are boring.

what you guys think?

RPGs hands down. Most of the MMOs are all that is bad in RPGs the part about playing a role in a story is left on the last place, and if that is let's say irrelevant for some, like WoW or Warhammer, they have at least a lot of content and items, but there are a lot of MMO's that don't even have the items, the 2nd most important part of an RPG imo (story being the first).

MMO's for the competitvness, combat and character building.

RPG's for the story and roleplay...

In terms of just "gameplay" mmo by a mile .... most WRPG have incredible average gameplay..

Not really interested in either, but if I had to pick, Singleplayer RPG's win it bya HUGE margin.

at the moment RPG's win hands down. Every MMO I've played devolves into pointless grinding very quickly, and there's no reason to play. If someone could make an MMO that uses the inherent advantages of MMO's, while incorporating the things that make single-player RPG's great, They'd have me. Doesn't look like that's gonna happen for a while.

I love both. There are alot more RPG's then MMO's that I like, but my favourite game is WoW. While its true that RPG's have a much better 'in-game' story to follow, big name MMO's, such as WoW & WAR, have a massive story behind them. Guild Wars, while not a typical MMO, has an interesting 'in-game' story though.

If they bring out a Warhammer 40k MMO, i'd say it would be the best story behind an RPG due to the background lore.

MMO's offer much greater gameplay though. I've been playing WoW for 4 years & still loving it. Bring on Northrend!

Same here...

And here.

I've played the World of Warcraft trial, bought and played Guild Wars for a couple of weeks, & bought & played Age of Conan for two days. None of these games did much for Herrick.

I'm not even a fan of multiplayer to begin with. The last multiplayer game I played besides the ones listed above was Quake III back in 2000. I played a few lan games in the dorms and it was pretty fun but I never had any interest in multiplayer since then...besides the three abberations listed above.

I agree. Based on the games out I would say that I prefer RPG's, but imagine a MMO that lives up to it's potential. I applaude MMO's like Guild Wars that took the risk to get out of the rut that is MMO's (Grinding, fee's, etc).

Many MMO's have proclaimed that the story is driven by the community but rarely happens.

agreed.

for me, the story will always be more structured in an RPG, which is obvious really, and you feel more like part of a novel or film.

MMO's always feel a bit too random and im not a fan of gaming with people i dont know - i only really like multiplayer against my friends and even then prefer local to online.

the monthly fees are not a huge issue, i just am not a fan of the style of the MMO. and my broadband sucks too.

lol ali, i commend your use of big font to emphasise your point.

i know youre not really into this sort of game, but what would be your oppinion of MMORTS Vs Traditions RTS (e.g. SP & MP)? I would still go for traditional every time over MMO.

That's a tricky question.

I don't like any CURRENT MMO-RPG enought to play them.

But in theory, I prefer MMOs over RPGs...and it isn't even remotedly close as to the interest they have.

The best game between the 2 genres? A RPG. The 2nd best game, another RPG...and so on. But the genre, MMO, is definitely more appealing in itself and I was willing to forego many critical design mistakes for quite a few years. Not going to forego such critical flaws anymore, getting grumpier with the years. :)

RPGs are great and I will always play them... the good ones at least. However, MMORPGs are able to capture my interest for a much longer time. When you really get into one, no other game or RPG can give you the same feeling. To me, they are much more rewarding.

Also, many gamers hate MMORPGs just for the fact that they have to pay to play. I know many gamers who never played an MMO, and say they don't like them... go figure. When I ask why they don't try, they say they don't want to pay.

And whoever says MMORPGs are not RPGs doesn't know what he's talking about.
