If you are looking for a turn-based strategy game, I would recommend getting Civilization 4. I only say this because you indicated that you are a PC gaming newcomer and you might not even really know about it. It is arguably the best turn-based strategy game there is, though it certainly has something of a learning curve.

However, if you really have your mind set on Galactic Civilizations 2 (which I also own)...most of the "games" you are thinking of I assume are the expansions to that game, meaning that you need Galactic Civilizations 2 in order to play them. This is not an uncommon practice for PC games. There are also packages that include the game and one or both of its expansions. There are two expansions to Galactic Civilizations 2. The first is Dark Avatar. The second is Twilight of the Arnor.

I don't think you can even buy the expansions to this particular game alone in stores, although you can directly from Stardock's (the game's publisher) own Impulse software. Whatever you do, don't buy the first Galactic Civilizations. That game is pretty bad in my opinion. Sorry if this is confusing. Let me know if you need any more info.

on a side note: you can get "Civilization III: Complete" for only $4.99 off of steam.

I liked Civ III when it came out, but IV is just so much more streamlined and elegant it puts III to shame in my opinion. That's still a great deal though.

Well, to clear on thing up, it not a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game. A game like Warcraft III or Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 or Warhammmer 40,000: Dawn of War II is a RTS game, meaning that....well, kind of like it sounds, there are no "turns." The game just keeps moving along regardless of what you are doing. In the case of Total War, the map portion is turn based, but the combat part is real time. Most games are one or the other though. The combat in most of the other games tends to be simpler than in the Total War games, but on the other hand there tend to be more unit types and as a result of it being simpler, and the computer opponents tend not to do some of the utterly foolish stuff (at least on harder settings) that they do sometimes in Total War combat, as the option to make unit positioning blunders simply isn't there.

Galactic Civilzations 2 and Civilzation 4 are both turn based strategy (TBS) games. Unlike the Total War series, they are ENTIRELY, even the combat. Total War is actually pretty unique in the regard that it sort of combines the two genres.

I have not played Civ Revolution, but everything I have heard about it is that it's "Civ lite," which is pretty much what they were going for I guess. That game, while good, is not really the full Civilization experience at all. Civilization 4 is much deeper. I would not say that you'd be disappointed by Galactic Civilizations II. I'm just saying that I think Civilization 4 is a better game. That's all.

Another game you very well might like, which is also on Impulse, is Sins of a Solar Empire. That game is a real time strategy game, but it has a very relaxed pace to it, and you can even pause it and issue commands while it's paused if you want. My recommendation is still Civilization 4. That game still stands out as the pinnacle of single-player strategy games out of everything I've played. (It can be played multiplayer online, but that's definitely not the reason to get it.)

Are you asking if World in Conflict is good? World in Conflict is fun for a while playing multiplayer online. World in Conflict is superficially called a "real time strategy" game, but I think that's kind of misleading. It's more like an action game that plays sort of like a RTS game. The developers obviously were inspired by Command and Conquer, as it has similar elements such as infantry garrisoning buildings, units that die very quickly, the equivalent of the devastating "super-weapons" that are found in that series, and a fast pace. However, there is no building or really much of an economy of any kind. You control a very small number of units according to the current specialization you have picked (again, talking about multiplayer here) and you are constantly given points with which to "purchase" more when they die. World of Conflict is fun, but don't get it expecting a deep strategic experience, because that isn't really what it's about.
