I have a Dell Inspiron 530 set up with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz CPU, 4GB RAM, 500 Watt PSU and currently a Geforce 8600GT.

I am deciding between these three GPUs as a replacment. Obviously the third one would be the best but i don't want to spend too much. If the difference in performance is only small I might as well go for the first or second one.

Will these work alright as a replacment for my 8600GT? And how much difference would each make?

I personally don't think you'd notice enough difference for it to really be worth it. You'd want to get a 9800GT or ATI 4850 if you're going to bother upgrading. Don't get me wrong, you'd see a definite improvement, i'd just go a bit further really.

I have a PNY 9600 768mb DDR3 its not a bad card, I just wouldnt recommed it now when you have 5750 and 5770 as cheap as they are or 4850 is under 100$, 9800GT is a nice card also, If I was you I would atleast get a 9800GT they are floating around for really cheap.

And BTW that 9600GSO that is on Ebay is only GDDR2 so you can mark that off as that card is crippled.

while the difference from your 8600gt will be big those cards are becoming the low end of gaming cards nowdays The minimum i suggest getting is an Ati 4850 or evern better an ATi 5770 if you are willing to spend about $160-180 ( that card will last you a while ) If you prefer nvidia go with at least a GTS 250 or a GTX 275 but do take note those belong to an older gen of video cards and nvidia is bound to replace them with new cards from the 4xx series soon ( the gtx 470 and 480 are already out but those belong to the top line thus quite expensive) I will say it again right now the best choice imo looks to be the 5770 or if you can find one of the older top line gen cards like a 4890 or GTX 275 cheaper than the 5770 go with them ( they will perform a bit better than the 5770 but they dont support Dx11 but that is not that a big of a deal nowdays but it might matter in a year or 2 )

Get a 9800GT. Much better card; you will notice a bigger improvement in performance than with those cards you are considering. Also, I think the 9800GT is a good card to use with a Core 2 Duo (neither will be bottlenecked).

I think 5750 would be nice for him, better than 4850 and GTS 250, the power consumtion is out of this world and the price is nice, would be perfect paired with that C2D

Thanks for the help everyone. I didn't really want to spend more than £60 though :\ (Around $100 I think)

Well then i guess the 4850 is your best bet even if you go a bit over budget ( about 70-75 ) worth is way better then the 9600series Or if you are lucky and can find a 5750 for about 70-75 go for that

I would say getting anything above HD4850/gts250/9800gtx+ (getting a better one than HD5750 as it's very near thoose card performance wise.)

They can still perform in most new games but they are soon little outdated to be honest, i know because i have one in my rig, althru it plays most games on maximum or near maximum settings given the standard medium resolution. (1680*1050) But if i was upgrading i wouldn't upgrade to cards that soon are to weak to play more demanding games on a fairly good setting.

A card as HD5770 would be a better choise today as the jump moneywise isn't huge and the noise/powerconsumtion/heat dispention in the case is better than the older cards erlier mentioned. (HD4850/gts250/9800gtx+)

And people don't comfuse TC more, the 9600GSO is less performing than the 9600gt, it's either because A) the card are fitted DDR2 memory slow clocked. B) Has a 128Bit memorybus with DDR3 memory. (The 128Bit bus is limmiting the performance as the memory is fairly slow GDDR3 unlike new cards that have very fast GDDR5 memory on a 128bit bus such as the HD5770 have. ) The 8800gso and 9600gso are the same card and performs near the HD4670/HD3850 512mb.

So don't get the GSO if anything!

If you can hold your upgrading thougths untill new cards arrive (and some competition in the mid segment) that would be the best, the cards listed will all munch and blow your current 8600gt but i would still recomend you getting a better card than what your current budjet can buy.

The least i can recomend is the HD5750, but save up a bit more and get the HD5770.

Thanks very much everyone. I'll take a look at some ATIs. The GSO is definately off the list :P
