HD4850 is better than 9800GTX in performance by a quite narrow margin it's even faster than the 9800GTX+, the HD4870 is in a higher pricerange but so is the performance.

HD4870 > 260GTX!

The 4870 is by far the best performer there, get it if you can!

i would recommend the 4850 if you dont care about crysis.

im pretty sure it can completely max anything else.

and if you havent played crysis, after about 10 minutes you stop caring about what settings your playing it on and how good it looks.

A big wallet.
Crysis works better with NVIDIA and it doesnt work well it crossfire, you might get 5 extra FPS, but thats it.
If you want to MAX crysis tri sli 3 GTX280s (but it doesnt end there, you need ram, a GREAT processer, power supply, cooling, etc etc)

If you want to play crysis on high-ish settings a single 4850 will do the job, if you want flawless frames the 4870 will do it.

Not entirely true. For dual gpus, yes sli is better than crossfire for Crysis, but you take the risk of getting an unreliable nForce mobo vs a superior Intel mobo. But for single gpu performance in Crysis, the HD4870 is faster than the the GTX 260, and the 9800gtx+ is faster than the HD4850 by 2-3 fps.

As a side note, it's not worth spending a lot of money for Crysis. It's playable at 25-30 fps and once you beat it, there's no reason to come back for more. Plus, the Cry Engine 2.0 will not be widely used in the future. Afaik the only games in development that use it are Warhead and an MMO. No developer is crazy enough to license such a demanding engine.

an ideal system for crysis:

790i ultra mobo

QX9770 at at least 4 ghz

tri GTX 280's

4 gb's of 1600 mhz ddr3,

a 1000w psu

a cosmos S case or similar

a watercooling system for all components

the price should be around 10k $
