2)Palit GeForce 8400 GS
3)XFX GeForce 8400 GS

b)pls. explain the following terms and their significance:

2)PCIE
3)MEMORY
4)BUS WIDTH
5)STREAM PROCESSORS
6)CORE SPEED
7)MEMORY SPEED

is core or memory speed better?

c) or, instead of a)1,2 or 3; can someone please tell me if there is a better AMD card for the same price?

A) You aren't left with very good choices. Save up more money. B) 1) Graphics Processing Unit. It's another word for graphics/video card. 2) It's a port that recent GPUs use. It's speed is 16x, and the older GPUs use AGP(8x) and PCI (2x?) 3) The amount of information that the GPU can load up at once. GPUs with less memory have to swap textures in and out more often and will cause lower performance. 4) Not sure, but I assume it has to do with the bandwidth of the PCI-E port. 5) It's just as it sounds. Stream processors is the term for how the GPU processes information - and as you might guess - the more, the better. 6) Speed of the GPU's Core (central processing). 7) Speed of the GPU's Memory (self explanatory) Core speed is more important than the GPU's memory speed. It makes more of a different.

I hate to be a downer but honestly it doesn't make a difference which one of those you pick because they're all very low end. I go to school too and I'm far from rich but if you just pinch quarters here and there, you should be at around $100 which would get you something you could game on. You won't be able to play most recent games on the 8400GS. If you could manage to save up to $100 - you'd not only have a better videocard, but you could get a videocard that will run games on High and last years.

about 50$, and im not into games like crysis or whatever, idk, i just need games like the new prince o persia or nfs undrcover, and stuff like that... i play mostly cartoony gams which are considered lame, like maybe shrek, and harry potter. the most will be undercover, prince o persia and perhaps halo 1 and 2...

Actually AGP was 2x, 4x and 8x (times the speed of PCI) making original PCI 1x. PCI-E 2.0 would be considered 32x, although it's just called PCI-E 16x 2.0 instead. And to the OP seriously don't bother getting an 8400GS, as others have mentioned it is a total waste of money. I doubt any NFS after Most Wanted will run acceptably on it. For just a little more cost you can get the 4670 which is an order of magnitude more powerful. Just save up a little while longer and get that.

8800 GTX would be better for gaming.

topsemag55

Bit of an odd recommendation there. Not only is it not available anymore, there are more powerful cards out now that consume less power also. Plus if he's looking to get an 8400GS I don't think there's much chance of his PSU being able to run an 8800GTX.

Yea as I said, save up a bit longer! I hate to break it to you but a 7600GT is about 3x faster than a 8400GS:lol:

Hi I went over to Tom's Hardware site and looked at the benchmarks between

an ATI 4670 and Nvidia 8400GS. THE DIFFERENCE IS HUGE!!!!!!!

For a bit more money you would be crazy not to get a 4670.

you don't need benchmars to know wich one is better really. Remember that the first number is the series they belong to. So a 9800 is series 9. The 3 number after say if it is cheap, mainstream or gaming:

100 to 400= cheap (like the 8400 gs)

500-600= mainstream (9600 gt)

700-900= gaming (9800 gtx)

then nvidia uses GS, GT, GTS, GTX and so on GX2 to identify how fast the cards go. A 9800GTX is faster than a 9800 GT

Between the one you mentioned i would go for any of the 2 9500 GT

The Geforce 7600GT was a mid-range card when it came out, the 8400GS was entry level, the second number is just as important as the first.

And here's a quick comparison for you:
8400GS: 450MHz core speed 8 Shaders, 4 Texture Mapping Units, 2 Render Outputs. Fillrate: 1800MP/s, 3600MT/s. 6.4GB/s Memory bandwidth on a 64 bit bus.
7600GT: 560MHz core speed 12 Shaders, 12 Texture Mapping Unit's, 8 Render Output's. Fillrate: 4480MP/s, 6780 MT/s. 22.4GB/s memory bandwidth on a 128 bit bus.

As you can see from the raw spec's, the 7600GT is going to totally destroy the 8400GS. Ok so the 7600 isn't unified so is less efficient but you get the idea. Check for yourself here. If you really can't afford a 4670, then AT LEAST get a 8600GT/9500GT as a bare minimum, else you'll be buying a card that is worse than your old one.

The 8400gs are not gaming cards ( in fact they perform the same as your old 7600gt)

Save $20-30 and get an ATI 4670 ( i think is about $65-70) which will allow you to play games at high settings

The nvidia 9500gt will allow you to do gaming at mostly medium settings but imo is not worth it since is only $10 cheaper than the 4670 and performancce wise there is a big margin between the 2 ( the 4670 is almost comparable with the 9600gt)

No seriously, they don't. It's not even physically possible for them to perform the same, just look at the difference in stats.

yes it would appear the 7600gt is more powerful then it so the 8400gs performance lies somewhere between a 6600gt and 6800gtx which for this day and age is very weak.

Definitly get the 4670. If you can't afford it, get a 4550 or 4570, they are about half as powerful but wipe the floor with the 8400GS, 8400GT, 8500GT and 9400GT graphics cards. The 4550 IS comparable and more powerful than the 7600GT especially in today's games that prefer unified shader GPUs.

You'll often find that manufacturer's will put a larger amount of DDR2 memory on a card, don't be fooled. These are slower than their GDDR3 counterparts, even if the GDDR3 version has less memory it will be faster. Also the GDDR3 version will work just fine, the memory is onboard the graphics card itself so is independant of whether your memory in your PC is DDR2 or DDR3. So yea, go get yourself one you won't be disappointed :)

To get a better card then what you have now would cost more money then you are willing to spend then; unless you find a used card. I could sell you my x1900 for $50 :D .

Just keep your 7600GT (Heck even 7600GS beats 8400GS) just a waste of money, either get the HD 4670 for $20 more or keep the 7600.

Alright. From what I've read. Do this TC. Keep your 7600GT for now. When you've got more cash, purchase either a Priority 1, ATI 4670 Priority 2, or a ATI 4770 ..depending on how much you save. The latter of these cards is much more powerful than the former.

You know.. 8400GS Is like said the other it about 3 Time less power then 7600GT ? so he would like to downscale is graphic to 800x600 !? it so non-sense you want to see how bad is 8400GS ? compare to 7600GS/GT

http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1595&Itemid=40&limit=1&limitstart=3
First we have 8400GS at 14fps for Company of heroes at 1024x780 : Vs 50fps for 8600GT which is Exact Power of 7600GT

You should get a 7600GT, I still wouldn't be upgrading mine if it wasn't for it being broken. Although it's getting hard to find 7600's you could try an 8600?

they are all the same and all useless at running any new games, get a 9600gt or better if you want to run new games.
