I'm planning to build a new pc. I'm curious to see which components I can bring over. I need a new motherboard and CPU. I'm pretty sure the RAM is re-usable and the GPU is for sure compatible. But how about things like the PSU and the harddrive? What else can I, or cannot transfer over to my new computeR??

thanks in advanced.

wow, um....
well first, list all the specs from ur old computer, and what u intend on getting int eh new one. if you just mean what parts can be switched, basically all of them. the CPU and cooler are tricky because of the mobo connection and thermal paste, but thats about it.

unless we're talking about a prebuilt, they sometimes use wierd things like BTX cases and proprietory set-ups, but assuming it's a rather normal computer you can reuse:

Disc Drive
Video Card
Case
RAM
Video Card
Sound Card
PSU

Computer parts are interchangeable, you can reuse everything. That being said... you need to figure out what MOBO and CPU you are going to get (Make sure the CPU is compatible with the MOBO).

Once you got that, then you need to make sure that your RAM cards are compatable to your new MOBO. There are several types of RAM, DDR2/DDR3, then you have different speeds.

Your Harddrives and PSU completely interchangeable. Your very rarely gonna run into a situation where they cannot be reused. Your Disk Drive can be reused... but that also goes back to the MOBO you get. If you have an older Disk drive they use a larger cable, i forget the name of it, to plug into your mobo. Now a days, they all come in SATA cables. You can buy a converter for it, but thats just extra money you would have to spend for an old disk drive. Would just recommend buying a new one.

When you ask a question like that, you also should post your specs, in order to know exactly what can be re-used. Some people mention hard drives as being re-usable; except when you come from a full P-ATA mobo and go to a full S-ATA board... Same for RAM modules. When you have an X58 board (DDR-3 tripple channel) and go for a socket 1155/2011 you'll have to get DDR-3 dual channel, etc...

psu can be reused aslong as its strong enough for the new system, and it must have pci-e power cables if your getting a new psi-e graphics card that needs a direct line to the psu ram cant be reused if your using ddr2 or older and you buy a new ddr3 mobo hard drives, cd, dvd etc can all be reused your motherboard must have the same slot type as your new cpu your case can be reused, aslong as it its a full atx and not a midi which can only fit smaller mATX motherboards windows ofcourse needs to be reinstalled. you cant just change all the parts and put back in your same harddrive and expect it to work. thats pretty much everything
