Mind explaining why you think it doesn't hold up to today's games? Graphics? I hope that's not what you were thinking.

Played both and I enjoyed Crysis much more. I've played so many shooter that they've started to feel all the same. HL2, stopped playing it 4 hours into the game due to the boring combat system and uninteresting story, Crysis on the other hand felt like something fresh.

They don't even let you kill a man with a giant turtle in HL2 what's up with that? If HL2 didn't come with a better game known as CSS I probable wouldn't have got it.

I think it's unfair to compare a twelve hour game with a six hour expansion, but I would definitely say that Crysis is better than HL2 and Warhead is better than HL2 Episode 1 and 2 combined.

Half Life 2. You can't argue with one of the most engaging single player campaigns, some of the best voice acting in a PC game, and for being one of the few games where mods are actually fun. the only thing Crysis really has over HL2 would be the graphics, physics system, and the fact that you can throw people (unless you mod the Super Gravity Gun)

oh god, not this again. I've already seen these HL2 vs Crysis taking a bad turn.

I'd say Crysis & Warhead are surely better than HL2 series in a few ways,,. but the HL2 has undoubtely been a unique unforgettable experience.. Valve has worked very hard in making HL2 what it is today... i respect their work... but i hate some of things they overdo... like the ridiculous puzzles & many more. Valve's Facial animation even with their old Source Engine technology is really incredible, their storytelling remains unmatched & there's alot to love in their games. But there are a few minor flaws which make HL2 games alittle unsatisfying for me. Wheras Playing Crysis is the best fps experience i've had after F.E.A.R. Crysis FTW! :D :P

& thank you for not creating a POLL for this. Let's start arguments guys.

Crysis has much better - and far more diverse and flexible - gunplay. It has much, much better AI. HL2's combat is pretty much an afterthought for the most part.

of course Crysis had the better combat, but the overall HL2 experience was better IMO. Crysis's awful ending and pathetic second half of the campaign (they lost me at the aliens) kind of made it a little bad, and i was super hyped for this title which kind of increased the disappointment. if it wasn't for HL2's mods (GMOD and SMOD in particular), then i'd have a different view. both games are a bit overrated in their own rights, anyways.

Yes, that's for sure. The rest depends on if we're comparing the two games as full games, or as FPS. Crysis is a much better fps than half life 2 because of it's better gunplay, AI, environments, etc. As a whole though, i think half life 2 is much better. Both stories are mediocre, but the story telling and characters in HL2 are much, much better. The pacing and puzzles (although they are starting to be repetitive by now) are some of the best in the genre. Half life 2 is more of an interactive movie, or first person adventure game. Crysis though is flat out an action packed fps, and what it does, it does it very well. Even if the industry is full of those action shooters, crysis is one of the best. HL2 though, it's simply in another category, it really is a unique experience.

To me, Crysis was more fun to play, mostly because of the vehicles and awesome physics, but HL2's story was so much better and the game was so much more immersive, so IMO HL2 was better.

Haven't played Crysis yet, but Half-Life 2 (particularly Episode 1 and 2) is outstanding.

...and yes, it holds up fine today, unlike the original game.

lol @ Crysis's AI

MrLions

Why? it has some quirks, but it also has a ton of advanced features and operates in a large, open environment. You can't expect perfection. But the AI does advance and retreat depending on combat conditions, takes cover, has a short term memory and can stack up and prioratise points of interest.

Remember also that most AIs are designed for one specific task - to function either as a combat AI or a stealth AI. Crysis' AI does both at the same time, and it fluidly facilitates the transition from one to the other.

Besides, Crysis' AI is way better than Half Life 2's. Half Life 2's is lol-worthy.

Not if you play FPS games primarily for gunplay, which is why most people play FPS games.

Crysis's awful endingbulletsword

What's so bad about Crysis' ending? We got a satisfying resolution to the current story arc - which is to say that the alien threat was thawrted - and we got a cliffhanger to lead into the second part. That's exactly what Half Life 2 did - it gave us a (kinda) satisfying conclusion to the current story arc while leaving us with tons of questions about what happens.

Half Life 2's storytelling is consistently better than Crysis', but I wouldn't say Half Life 2's story as a whole is better, and I don't see how Crysis' ending is any worse than Half Life 2's at all.

and pathetic second half of the campaignbulletsword

I think it's a little unfair to call it the second half. If you play Crysis the way it's meant to be played, which is to say you explore and play around with the (human) AI, your suit abilities and the different ways of fighting, the "first half" is more like two thirds to three quarters of the game. There's less than three hours from the start of the zero gravity section to the end of the game, unless you take your time - which there is no reason to do. I personally spent twelve hours playing the game, nine of which were in the "first half" of the game.

And in the final three hours we go through a large number of environments (zero gravity, ice jungle, regular jungle, VTOL, aircraft carrier) and there's plenty of cool set pieces. I happily admit that the latter stages of Crysis are weaker, but people aren't very analytical and objective when criticisng the last few hours.

HL2's ending is pathetic.

Sure, now it all makes sense, since we had the Episodes.

But back in 2004, HL2's ending was a catastrophic cliffhanger. At least Crysis, Halo 2 and even Halo 3 make it obvious that the story will continue.

I enjoyed Half-life more. Maybe it was because of the story and the character depth (and growth), but Crysis story was dull and the characters had little to no depth. It was much more interesting to find out what happend to Gordon and the gang than Nomad and his, master chief, friend Syke (That's about all you know about them, their names). Crysis Warhead did do a bit better on the storyline (background on Syke's pilot friend was interesting), but I still felt like I was led through a maze of aliens & enemies for no reason, except that I was told to.

Everything else (Graphics, AI, Gunplay, etc.) isn't a factor because Crysis came out several years late. Half-life's is still doing well, but they're supposed to be zombies... (IMO) Crysis's AI was horrible... They would see their friend get shot and slowly walk over to them and into my sights. The freaking helis were annoying as hell. The boat gunners have super-human sight and strength. Overall, AI wasn't great, but it didn't fall flat on it's face because of poor AI.

If Crysis was made back when Half-life 2 was, HL2 would have owned the nano-socks off Crysis.

Well I felt I was going through a maze of aliens and enemies in HL2 just because I was told to, and this was a major complaintat that time.

If Crysis was made back then, everybody would have praised it for the physics and ignore HL2's physics:P Anyway, in 2004, Far Cry was considered by Gamespot the biggest step in gaming since HL.

2004 was the year of Far Cry and HL2, poor Doom3 was considered a flop... I remember that even in 2005 there were threads bashing Doom3 and saying FEAR had better graphics. And now, guess which game aged worse?

Now I'm going to read that link in your sig:P

I Half-Life 2 a much better game. I have played crysis, and I agree that it does have superb graphics, physics, gunplay etc. but somehow it just didn't seem good enough. Perhaps, because I am bored of the jungles. I mean, crysis doesnot offer much change in the surroundings, either we are trekking through a jungle or that frozen jungle level. Though the "zero-gravity" level was there, but I din't enjoy it much and wanted it to end (while I was playing it). HL2 does provide a lot of variation in settings....... A city, that ravenholm horror level, desert type thing, nova prospect etc., what I am trying to say is that each environment was different from the other, and this variety makes HL2 quite good. And let us not forget, the source engine was optimized well and HL2 could quite easily run on 2 years old machines.

Edit: the gravity gun too was a nice addition (especially the puzzles part).

Plus, if your considering the episodes and portal too, then crysis is certainly not better.

HL2 no contest. Not only is it an indepth game with an amazing story, but

it has spawned a whole culture of mods. They have made an engine that

has brought on tens of award winning indepentent online shooters (i.e. distopia, insurgancy)

I love everything about HL2 and for it to still be a relavent game today when it came out in 2004

tells you something.

Crysis and Warhead are better and it's not close. They as much gameplay variety (if not more), while having insanely superior core gameplay. Warhead's multiplayer is actually fun for more than just gimmicky item-throwing, too.

I say Crysis. I couldn't get into Half Life 2 just bored the hell out of me. One of the best storylines (IN MY OPINION! MY OPINION!) is Crysis. Now reason why I put that in in my opinion thing is I could see someone telling me i'm wrong when its my opinion not yours.

Now no i'm not a crysis fanboy there are flaws in the game but what game doesn't? I personally liked the story a lot in crysis the multiplayers good but this is one of the very few games i play for story 99% of the games I get are for multiplayer lol.

Crysishas similar structure to HL2, and even if we don't consider graphics it's still slightly better. Much more involving but suffers from same pacing issues as HL2. Far Cry is still better then both.
