So, I want to get into a good multiplayer FPS and I'm looking at CS:S and TF2 as potential candidates. I just want opinions on these two. Which do you prefer? Which do you think has the better/stronger community?

There is no better or comparison here. They are 2 completely different and distinctive fps games. jedikevin2
I just want opinions Stoutlad
Which do you prefer? StoutladI didn't see which part was hard. I understand what you are saying, but I'm only asking for people's opinions. Surely those exist.
I would say TF2,
Its lots of fun learning all the different classes.
Also gatta love the constant updates for each different class. Expecting engineer update soon =D
The TF2 community is really strong. If my favorite server is full i got lots of other favorite server to pick from.
I love both games. Though, I've put in more hours into CS:S (there's a reason for that), so I go with CS:S
So you're saying that CS:S doesn't require any skill to play, just who can aim and spam their attack key (or mouse button) the fastest? Gee....I know I'm not the best at twitch skill and I get my ass handed to me in CS:S at times, but when you get a good group together and they can communicate, you can mop the competition. You do need a bit of luck in CS:S at times, but it's not going to get you very far. Practice in both games will greatly improve your skill and ability to play well. If you want something that feels more realistic, CS:S is your game. If you want something that looks more cartoonish and silly, but still requires skill to play you want to go with TF2. I personally dislike the look of TF2 and I can't get myself to play - it could be a good game, but I hate how it looks. CS:S is my vote.tf2.
css is mostly twitch skills and cheap tactics while tf2 is fun and takes teamwork and skill

I would argue that TF2.. More pointedly the spy takes way more skill to be good at then CSS.. It not only requires to require quick thought, strategy, and twitch lik others, but you have to play mind games and be as unpredictable as possible.
TF2 for me. I never liked the idea of having to sit in spectator mode for the rest of the match.
Plus CS is either full of 13 year old hackers or elitist competative "pros" who hate your guts if you don't play 13 hours every day. I'm not saying TF2 completely lacks those kinds of players but at least it's got a fair ammount of "middle class" ones. Also TF2 is actually fun to play.

i lol'd :lol:Its a tough choice to choose between those two; that being those are two of the best MP pc games.
CSS: Hella fun mods. You got prison break, deathmatch, gun game, surfing ( really fun) and zombies and a few others. Its good if you like using really weapons and pubbing. Its also nice to join a community and meet new people. Its still going strong after like 6 years. It has very good maps, weapons, mods, skins, and modes.
TF2: is also a freaking fun game. The community and teamwork is nice. The game was set up around team work with the classes they have. The maps are great and the weapons and other kits are fun to use. The achievements are nice and so are the unlocks. They constantly update the game with fixes/changes and new additions. THe game modes are fun to play. I prefer the attack & defend (forgot name) and i really dig gold rush. Where u move the horse/gold on a trail through the map. The art style is nice and the gore is well done. Seriously, buy both. you can go wrong.
I found CS:S to be more fun to me. I play a lot of TF2 as well. But between those two games, I would say CS:S is better, at least to me. It's mostly about preference though since both games are quite amazing.
I prefer CS:S by far, CTF gametypes never appealed to me all that much, but if TC likes CTF Im sure he will get a kick out of TF2, got a nice artstyle ^^
The erasons for me liking CS:S more is partly due to the nice weapon ballances in that gane, and I like the maps more, the rules, and just everything in between.
I would not even say CS:S is all that hard, and most places Ive been (servers) people are generally nice, altho occationaly there is the annoying mic spammer.
But they are far from identical.
TF2 is lighthearted, class based, not very serious (but yet mildly competetive) CS:S is a more serious game, with a different pacing, and focuses more about objectives given, and execution of said objective. It usually has a decent deal of teamplay, only had thing (but also a good thing oddly enough) is that when you die you have to wait for the round is over.
TF2 is what I categorize as a kids game easy to play and is for teh casuals While CSS punishes you a lot for being bad at the game. Seriously >_> you are not going to beat a guy whos played CS for the majority of his life :P you really can't choose either or cause well they are both two different type of games. But if i had to id go with CSS which is fun when played competitively I hate pubbing and I despise TF2 for what it's turning into so i'd go with CSS. Pluss CSS has zombies! :o And for those who say it's filled with hackers....well every game is filled with hackers >_> probably have the same amount in every game and that goes with the 13 year olds....:| You guys do know the developers put a /kick ban and /mute system into their games for when that becomes an issue right? MrLions
It's apparent you have no idea what you're talking about.
TF2 requires much more skill than CSS.
TF2 = 3 directions of movement, CSS = only 2. That's just one reason.
It's true....TF 2 has 9 entirely different ****s, CS:S has...1 all you need to "learn" when playing CS is how the weapons work.CS:S by miles, TF2 is such a shallow game.

There's nothing more to TF2 than what is put infront of you... that's why it's shallow. CSS has depth that can't be seen and must be learnt which takes a good while to do so.
Anyone who knows the basics of playing an FPS can pick up TF2 and do well.

3 directions of movement... can you explain what that means?TF2 for the casuals? Yes, it has been simplified since the classic Team Fortress, but I wouldn't call it "for casuals". Anyway CS:S is quite hard for me, can't stand waiting for the respawn (Yes I know there are respawn servers) and there are too many 1337s

You are pretty confused. You want to know why CS:S/CS 1.6 is harder than TF 2? because most of the community played it for years and when I say years I mean at least 5 or 6, that's why it takes more "skill" but that skill isn't to be good at the game, that skill is required to do something against the very good players that it has. The CS games are very simple, extremely simple, because of that simplicity there are almost no things that can happen unexpectedly and because of that reason it's a competitive game. TF 2 has an attitude and a lot more personality than CS, there is a lot more to TF 2, what you're describing there is CS where all that matters is what's in front of you and how fast you can solve that problem. Anyone who every played an FPS can play CS:S and after a few hours they can master it, but again, because of that community mastering the game is not enough, you need reflexes and a good understanding of the hitboxes to be able to take them on and that doesn't mean skill it just means dedication and getting used to it.You are pretty confused. No I'm not confused at all, I've been playing CSS for 5 years and I've owned TF2 since it came out.
TF2 may have more character (that's not saying much) but my main gripe with the game has always been that there's nothing to learn about the game nothing to get better at... I just feel like I'm playing a game entirely based on rock paper scissors and luck. There's just nothing to it bellow the surface... aka shallow.
Yes CSS is simple but it's impossibly hard to master, each gun would take you way longer to perfect than any one class in TF2.
Also where do you think skill comes from exactly? Because last time I checked you have to put time and dedication into something to become skillful at it... unless it's really easy.....
3 directions of movement... can you explain what that means?Tyrone77
In TF2 players can rocket jump or propel themselves through the air, therefore opening up a new direction of movement that is not seen in CSS.

You're confused. It is apparent you've barely even played TF2 if you think the game is based on rock, paper, scissors, and luck. What you are seeing as luck is skill from other plays (and therefore your lack of skill).
TF2 requires much more skill than CSS. It's a fact.
Weapons that shoot bullets in a straight path are easy to learn, weapons with projectiles that arc are harder to learn, and even harder when you are trying to hit an opponent with an arc'ing weapon when you are both flying through the air.
In my experience TF2 community is more relax and chilled while CS:S is more competitive with the usual trash talker. Both have excellent gameplay but I think the learning curve for TF2 is faster then CS:S. Try getting them both because they're one of the top multiplayer FPS that the PC could offer but I personally would get TF2 first.
Is there any weight to the people who are saying one requires more skill than the other?stoutladYep, you'll have a much harder time getting into and getting good at CS than TF2. Like someone said before, if you're at all farmiliar with MP FPS games TF2 isn't much different, you should fit right in. CS on the other hand has been around for 10 years (dating back to 1.6) so there's people out there that have played the games for a good 10 years already, take some time to get good at.
