Wow :| Try playing both games before you comment.

I used to LOVE the traditional style of RTS.. but Company of Heroes has taken me over. I enjoy both immensly. I love being able to setup lots of defenses (in AOE, building walls and towers around your base).. but COH is just awesome intense action.

Tactical RTS, prefer the action and faster games. Don't have time to waste on a long RTS any more :(.

I think modern RTS games are much better. Traditional RTS is great and all, but everyone has to grow up some time.

I think both CoH and AoE3 are both modern RTS's. Sure they both tried to take the genre in different directions but I view both of them as progressive titles. When I think of 'traditional' RTS's I think more of C&C and Blizzard titles.

What's traditional about Age of Empires? I'm not saying its modern, I just don't understand what I am supposed to argue about.

What i consider the terms to be...

Traditional = Resource gathering - You are required to gather resources to build, expand, or upgrade your forces. you can build till your computer crashes!

Mordern = Resource allocation - You have a set amount of resources, and you build to suit your needs, also population caps are in place.

Persnoally i perfere the Traditional any day. BUT what i don't like is the spin that has been put on traditional RTS such as super fast action. I much perferre the turtle warfare tactic... slow and stead wins always wins the race!

have played CoH demo and yet to buy and play it. I'll have to say traditional RTS. i grew up with them and got addicted with them. AoE 1, AoM, C&C, SC, WC, BR, etc. Still, i'm having fun with CoH demo. Can't wait to play it. Haven't played most modern RTSs.

i like both - they each have their pros and cons

if i want the slow paced resource gathering and base building, then really taking my time clearing out the enemy, then i go for something like AOE3, but a for a quick breakneck game i would go for COH or WiC.

Modern RTS - particularly COH - that game has proven what 3D actually is - a fully interactive and changing environement, based on the players actions.

At times the combat is more like an action game, moving your soldiers from cover to cover while firing or when you just sit back and watch the combat unfold.

What is better about "traditional" rts games?

Personally I like modern but that dosen't mean AOE 3 isn't still fun. Its just a matter of perspective.

Modern because of the 3D engine.

There's a time and a place for everything. Good games are good games. I still remember when the original Warcraft came out. I think I'm a little partial to the older style RTS's - and another kind of RTS as you can see :) .

Modern because of the 3D engine.

AOE3 has a 3D engine too, but it's still a traditional style RTS.
