warcraft 3 is newer, and has heroes, starcraft is older and thus missing many nice interface things (i.e. tabbing between units/buildings) and has no heroes. i prefer wc3.
Starcraft. It's so much more fun online. Warcraft 3's online is practically dead aside from DoTA (which isn't even that fun). For Starcraft I'll often grab a friend and make 2vs2 Lost Temple and Bloodbath matches - and there's rarely a shortage of players.
I prefer starcraft, but both are good games. Just that starcraft is so much more fast paced and more competitive, I also found it to be alot more fun especially online with friends.
To be honest, I didn't like Warcraft 3 too much.. It requires far more micro then Starcraft by a long shot.. With such littel base building, and even fewer units, micromanaging to the extreme is king..
