my chose is fallout 3,Oblivion, mass effect{modern RPG's}, however what is Oblivion doing in the section of modern RPGs?HydraRizlimModern RPG's are games that has not the complex nature of rpg games. Modern RPG's are usually FPS or TPS. and they are not turn based. modern RPG's are not those RPG's that you only use gun in it. Even a game like oblivion is modern{of course in this poll}. I hope you got my meaning.
haha nice, you followed my thread format with regards to RPG's....
Anyhow, I went with the BG games, but man it is so close above Planescape group and Diablo group for me!
Baldur's Gate group is losing????? Must be NN and its subpar sp dragging it down.
Well done Poll!
Planescape Torment and Fallout 1&2 are losing to Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect?
I know that shouldn't surprise me, but wow. :(

By that definition, Eye of the Beholder would be considered a modern RPG.
Option first for me.
It's really disturbing that such crappy overrated pseudoRPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3 are winning with RPG Masterpieces like Fallout 1&2 and Planescape: Torment :o

I couldn't agree more but there's no accounting for taste, or lack thereof. The CRPG is doomed. It is now basically a genre that, ironically, is made for people who don't actually like RPGs. Go figure.

This is ridiculous. It's mainly the cross-platform release plague, because publishers are so concerned with profits (they're all publicly traded now) they won't release a big-budget RPG just for the PC. This means that it will have to be developed from the ground up to be accessible to uneducated (in gaming terms) console gamers who have the attention span of a hummingbird. It completely screws us real gamers who enjoy a deep RPG with real gaming depth. That said, I do enjoy the action RPG subgenre the best, like Divine Divinity, Titan Quest, KOTOR, and D2. But the closest I can get to the console schlock is KOTOR - even Oblivion is an overrated mess with no real role playing. It's an action-adventure with stats. The future of RPGs lies in the hands of European developers and publishers like CDV, who will pony up the dough for genuine, PC-only RPGs.NWN as a custom content platform only.
Diablo is about as close to an RPG as my grandmother is to a pole dancer in my view.

Diablo is more a hybrid Action game than a RPG. That being said, the original Diablo strangely had a major influence on the framework of WRPG's.

why "no jrpg"?Olivisc
Probably because this is a PC forum and JRPGs don't really exist on this platform.
I want to have a word with the people who says: fallout series aresimilar to NWN and BG.NWN and BG are games that follow D&D rules.[such as chosig class, choosing your alignment,etc] and you can't complete the game if you don't struggle with your enemies. but in a game like fallout, you can complete the game even without killing a rat. fallout combats are action point based and it uses SPECIAL character creation system. you must choose to be evil or good during the game, but in D&D's you choose this at the first of the game. fallout happens in a real modern world. but NWN & BG happen in a fantasy old world. in fallout, you can only increase your character abilities{strength,intelligence,etc} at the character creation screen and you can't raise the during the level-ups.but in D&D's you can raise them in certain level-ups.so as you can see, they are different from each other. of course thosing a ey are similar in one thing: they are all masterpieces.

No love for Diablo? For shame.

Diablo DEFINES the term RPG, only later people started to get drunk and thought it would be cool if they invented lots of sub-genres like ARPG, CRPG, ETCRPG
Baldur's Gate series should include Planescape Torment, IceWind Dale, and the NWN games (which I didn't like asmuch). Threadstarter wanted to seperate this behemoth to make the poll more interesting.
Bethesda is doing a fine job though. Fallout 3 and the Elderscrolls are extremely good games.
Hard pick, I loved Fallout 1&2 to death but the same goes for Baldurs Gate..hmmm I think I'll go with the 1st choice. Oblivion is winning? I guess I should have expected that.
I am confused by the poll selection, When looking at the thing I thought it was going to be development studios. Of which there should be no contest Black Isle is still the #1 in my eyes, I'll put Bioware in the #2 spot. While I enjoy some of the newer RPGs they have worked on it doesn't feel like the same depth that the older games had.
Black Isle games
* Fallout (1997)[6]
* Fallout 2 (1998 )
* Planescape: Torment (1999)
* Icewind Dale (2000)
* Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter (2001)
* Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter - Trials of the Luremaster (2001)
* Icewind Dale II (2002)
* Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (2004)
Among the products whose development Black Isle assisted are:
* Baldur's Gate (1998 )
* Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (1999)
* Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000)
