I'm wondering what multiplayer PC game requires the most skill and is the hardest to play. I cast my vote for Unreal Tournament 2004. Never before have I seen a game that requires more skill to play competitively than UT2004. What's your opinions?

Thanks, Prozac

I agree about UT2004. To some it may seem like a massive spamfest, but it really is deep and requires quick precision, fast reflects, etc. You didnt mention the genre of the games though. If your talking about FPS only, I can say Americas Army 2.0. I played that game for years, was in a few clans that competed in TWL, CAl, etc. It wasnt a noobfest like COD4, you needed to learn the maps, work as a team, always communicate, etc.

RTS games require skill, or at least some brain power and the ability to plan your strategy.

No I'm talking about fps because you have to have great movement skills, know all your weapons, and be able to use smart strategies and tactics to both kill and stay alive. UT2004 is now an old game, but I have yet to play another fps that takes as much skill...but I'm sure I haven't played them all.

Starcraft: skill as in speed, not as much in strategy as it should be. Whoever said Red Orchestra is right.

DotA (Defense of the ancients of Warcraft 3 TFT - see getdota.com, playdota.com) and Left4Dead. CoD4 is a noobfest as some1 said above me. L4D is about learning the map, playing as a good team and reward yourself with PURE zombie ownage. You'll need lots of buddies because you can't win with a noob on your team. (ofc if the opposing team isn't filled with noobs). It's a brilliant game. Also UT2004 is rly good (but kinda' old). Shooters are just next level on PC. You can't match the accuracy of a mouse with a controller. Doesn't feel natural.

mainly speed and the ability to control lots of units at the same time efficiently.but benefiting from your unit's abilities is also important.

The game doesn't particularly matter, if you are talking public servers then you want the game with the highest concentration of good players (literally unquantifiable) or if you mean competitive ladders/leagues and so on, the opponent would be 90% more important than the game.

I made similar thread to this about a year ago, I assume you mean twitch skill. Most of the consensus at that time was that Quake Arena required the most twitch skill.

It's not an FPS game, that's for sure. Some of the top RTS players are friggin gods with the keyboard & mouse. If you look at a first-person-view of a player's computer screen during a RTS tournament, it pretty much looks like a blur and you can't figure out wtf is going on.

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 .... took me almost 6 months just to get complex engine management down. Its harder to get a bogey off your six than you think unless you know each of the 500+ planes strengths and weaknesses. Plus theres nothing like leading a squad of 4 or 5 b17s together over teamspeak into a bombing run against 30+ AA sites and 30 opposing real world enemies with fellow fighter pilots flying defensively around you.

mmo's take a different type of skill. at least the ones that have pvp. they require great knowledge of the classes and all the abilities to plan out the right counters. Then actually executing them at the right time. if it's group vs group then you have to take into account group coordination and ability stacking. straight pve mmorpgs are more about knowledge than "skill" though.

You wouldn't say that trying to get a high arena rating...

CS I think, it always takes ages for me to get used to playing the game; fights last a split second then someone dies.

I would say RTS games... You need brain, agility, need to work as a team and to have good control at a lot of things on the same time.

Yeah, the kind of skill that's required to microwave pizza pops and last long hours without bathroom breaks!

you actually need to practice regularly to acheive and maintain any kind of skill/ability in those games.

Quake 3/ quake line now, and CS 1.6 and source (source is just as hard stop living in the past 1.6 fanbois). and yes nreal is quite skill driven too. Anyone who says any of the CODs especially COD4 should be shot.
