I've been trying to make a decision on which computer to play PC games. My desktop PC is 4 years old with the exception of the video card. My gaming laptop is fairly new. Although my desktop's video card is stronger, its processor is very old and the monitor resolution is so low that it's hard going back from 1080p.

Desktop

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz

4GB DDR2 RAM 800

MSI 550GTX Ti 1GB

1280x1024 monitor resolution

MSI GT780 laptop

Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

GTX560M 1.5GB DDR5

1920x1080 monitor resolution

Desktop all the way, simply because it is easily upgradeable and you can easily replace parts that break. Try finding a specific part for a laptop for cheaper than a semester at Harvard.

I only own a laptop for traveling, other than that would not have one in my home.

You also did not mention price here.....typically you can build a desktop to beat any laptop at the same price. Also will have a much bigger monitor.

Desktop all the way bro. It may be slightly weaker than that laptop, but you can always upgrade it down the road. Same can't be said for the laptop.

I will be going to Japan next year though hopefully. I plan to study Japanese language and then Game Design there. So upgrading my desktop is out of the question and that's why i got a gaming laptop.

Then go with the laptop I guess. Seems like you had your mind made up before you posted this, so not sure of the point here.

- Gaming

- Laptop

Pick one. It's that simple.

How? Someone said gaming on my desktop is better because it's upgradeable but in my case that's not possible because i have no plan whatsoever to upgrade my desktop. I was asking for technical reasons. 550GTX Ti is stronger than GTX560M especially on lower res since the laptop is on full HD 1080p. Does this mean it's better to game on my desktop when it comes to heavy games like Crysis 2, upcoming BF3 and Rage, etc? sigh...

unless you have a rebate, for the price of the laptop, you should be able to find or build a desktop with a gtx570 at least (1080p monitor included). The 2 choices you put here are not in the same price range at all.

i do not plan to build nor upgrade anything. these two computers are what i have right now and i'm simply asking the question which is better to game in terms of hardware power.

Yes i like to experience Japan. I'd like to bring my desktop but the expense would be too much compared to having a gaming laptop and just bringing it over. The casing i use is gigabyte 3daurora 570 full tower and it's pretty big and heavy. The laptop's heavy too but it's a less of a hassle compared to having the trouble to deliver the desktop. I don't know if there are PC gaming hardware being sold in Japan anyway considering they aren't into PC games except visual novels.

Guys he already owns both, he's just wondering which is better for gaming. The 550ti is about the level of a 5770 if I'm correct. The 560m is probably about the same or worse is my guess. And post this on the pc hardware forums, you'll get faster and better responses.

If you have to ask I assume you cannot tell the difference when you are playing on them, right? Seriously if one does not look better or run better than the other then it is your preference. Spec-wise we can all theorize which one should be better, but you are the one with them in the room with you. I took this thread as more a "which one should I buy" or something like that.

The difference that i can tell is just the resolution. Of course, gaming on 1080p is better but 550GTX Ti is said to be stronger than GTX560M so i really have no idea which computer is better for gaming. Is this just a matter of resolution? Can the laptop be able to run Rage and BF3 better than my desktop?

If they both play the games well and one looks better than the other who cares what is "said to be stronger"? Seriously, you have the answer right in front of you, grab a graphically intensive game and see if one handles it better and looks better. No one here is more qualified than you to answer this question.

Why don't you just buy the parts and try to build it/find someone to build it.
