I hate unit spamming rts's and as such have been turned off from the genre since starcraft. I have wanted to get a new rts that has some mods (not most important but helps), good online, and as little base building as possible. I've narrowed my choices down to these.

Warhammer 40,000 Platinum

Warcraft 3 Battlechest

Company Of Heroes

Warcraft being by blizzard I trust their making of games but I am not so sure of THQ as I have never bought a game from them. All 3 of these have great reviews and friends have told me great things about both aside from warcraft 3. I'm eventually gonna get them all but I only have enough $$ to get one now.

THQ is a publisher just to let you know, Warhammer and Company of Heroes were both developed by Relic, which is an excellent RTS developer and is definately on my list of top developers. You'll want Company of Heroes if you want a realistic approach to RTS, Warhammer if you want a more of a sci-fi kind of feel, Warcraft if you like the Blizzard formula (should be easy to figure out if you've played Starcraft before). All of the games you listed have base building involved but it's nothing too excessive. Some other games I recommend to you with little base building would be the Ground Control series which has no base building, World In Conflict which has a similar system to Ground Control, and the Homeworld series, which was also developed by Relic, where all you have to worry about is your capital class ships which make smaller ships.

Whiteblade999

THQ is just the publisher. The developer is Relic, responsible for the seminal Homeworld amongst other awesome games.

My recommendation is that you try demos of all three and decide for yourself. My personal favourite is Dawn of War.

you can't really lose with any of those, Warcraft 3 is the oldest, but still lives up to the others. In WC3, you have small unit sizes, but also have hero units which you need to monitor and use their powers. The other two games are basically similar except DoW is sci-fi and CoH is WW2. I would play in this order:

WC3 (if you don't mind the leveling up heroes with powers thing)

DoW (no resource gathering)

CoH (same as DoW, but better)

Argh I pity you man, that's such a hard decision! :P But at least it sounds like you'll be getting them all eventually so I guess it's not that bad. But anyway, I bought the WarCraft 3 Battlechest about 2 months ago and have been having a blast! It's a really really good game! On the other hand, I DL'ed the demos for both DoW and CoH and so now it looks like I'll be getting the CoH Gold Edition (which comes out in like a week). So really, I guess it all comes down to which kind of setting you want. Oh and also, just to let you know, the main difference between WarCraft 3 and the two Relic games (DoW and CoH) is the fact that in DoW and CoH have "control points" that must be captured to get more resources. In WarCraft 3, you have to gather lumber (from nearby trees) and gold (from gold mines scattered across the map). So I guess I'll just recommend WarCraft 3 for now, but say to get the rest later! :P
