If you have a dual-core and over 2GB of RAM, definitely go Vista. If it's single-core, stick with XP and/or if you have below 2GB of RAM, stick with XP. I run an Intel Q6600 Quad-Core with 4 gigs of RAM and an OC'd 8800GTX, which is plenty for years to come for my needs. It all depends if you're hardcore or casual.
there isnt really a downside, more like an upside to vista, xp is not using the cpu to its full potential, vista will take advantage of a dual or quad core cpu much better than xp, dont forget that xp only recognizes 3-3.5 gigs of ram so if you get more than that your losing some, and of course if you want dx10 you'll need vista, i've been running vista 64bit with no problems for a while now so i would reccomend that.
Vista has caught up to XP in game performance, in some cases surpassed it. X360PS3AMD05
Maybe the video drivers have, but still slower for me... But ive got a CPU bottleneck, and vista is more cpu intensive... so if youve got a better CPU it may be more even... But XP will probably still be slightly faster for most games.
