If you're planning on overclocking.. go for the Gigabyte DS3 rev. 1.3 and the Core 2 Duo E4300 instead of that Gigabyte S4 and X2 4600+

The 8600GT is fine.

Well, Core 2 Duos are currently the best processors around and hell yes. Core 2s are definitely far superior if you plan on overclocking.

The E4300 can overclock to 3.0GHz on stock cooling, in which it would completely destroy AMD's best processor, the X2 6000+

Yep, that's it.

Everything else looks fine really, considering your budget.

Well other than the part where it fried and took my ram with it. Lots. First it takes 15 seconds for it to power on after turning on the psu. It goes through some weird sequence. Then the overclocking features are extremely horrible, you really cant go higher than 235mhz on the fsb before it goes unstable. There is nothing you can do for the ram except raise voltage, which really doesn't help people who have nicer ram, being forced to run your ram with higher latency blows, like me. And I was only able to overclock my x2 4600+ to 2.5ghz, an amazing 100mhz more. Any higher and it would BSOD like crazy. Oh yeah and it wouldn't run my ram in dual channel no matter what.

And your rig is similar to waht mine was gonna be. Same ram, same cpu, same mobo.

That sucks.. I'd suggest the Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe if you're going to get a new motherboard. Best motherboard I've owned. :)

I'd avoid the M2N vanilla and M2N-E / M2N-E SLi since they have low max RAM voltages (around 1.9-1.95V).

Not to steal his thread but I only have $80 to spend on mobo, excluding shipping. You think it would be okay to get an open box item? Cause I saw it on newegg for $80, but still it's refurbished... so I'm not to sure.

I wouldn't buy an open-box motherboard.. no cables/connectors that you'd need and there's a possibility of buying a dead mobo.

Maybe you can try MSI's K9N Neo-F motherboard?

hmm yeah I was looking at that one earlier today, and I read some professional reviews, they seemed pretty good. I'm just not too sure if I want to order it online after what happened to my other mobo. And fry's sucks for not even having it. I'll see if I can find it elsewhere around where I live.

Ehehe

I had a hard time choosing which one to go for, especially since the M2N-E SLI was half the price compared to the Deluxe. I eventually went for the M2N-E SLI. I spent the extra money on 2 GB DDR2 PC6400 low latency RAM from Kingston instead, and found exactly what you said: 1.95V max voltage setting on the motherboard. Well, my memory works and is stable at 1.95V, but I wonder: Is it used to it's fullest capacity at this setting (the memory modules are supposed to run at 2V)?

I guess I'll go for a more expensive motherboard some other time (I usually choose a better motherboard, but this time I didn't). I didn't have alot to spend and thought that the M2N-E SLI would be alright, and it's good so far and adequate to my needs and I have no complaints about it otherwise.

One other reason I picked the M2N-E SLI instead of the Deluxe was because I still use regular PATA-drives, and the M2N-E SLI has 4 X PATA while the Deluxe only has 2.

Well, just felt like sharing my story.

^There is no need to downgrade already cheap ram. Corsair XMS2 is very nice ram, even at lower speeds than DDR2 800. And it's only about $10 more than Value Ram which honestly isn't that hot, plus you won't be getting DDR2 800 for $60 bucks, at least not 2gbs.
