plain and simple your fine an i5 or i7 as nice as they would be are not really a worthwhile endeavor office work woundlt ever use it and gaming would barely ever require it.. the core 2 quads and phenom x4's do the job fine.. as for the gtx 275 since its not even close to being on any system requirements soon it wouldnt need a change.. try again at say christmas or after the new year.
Do you have any idea how great your system is right now, as it is? You have the best Core 2 Duo CPU ever made (if I'm not mistaken), and one of the best video cards on the planet. Have you ever overclocked your E8600? You could probably get that thing well over 4ghz on air with a decent cooler.
You don't need to upgrade anytime soon my friend. Not unless you're going to be playing these games at a resolution over 1080p with AA on.

I didn't say the best dual-core.. I said Core 2 Duo. Also, I just went looking for one of those AMD dual-core chips you're talking about.. and I didn't find one that was over 3.33ghz stock. The Core 2 Duo Wolfdales are pretty good overclockers.. one of the best chips ever for that. You're telling me that somebody has one of those dual-core AMD chips over 4.5ghz on air? Or over 5ghz on water/phase change?

Personally if you're just gaming they're right you don't need an upgrade at all. Now if you multitask while gaming You might want to upgrade to a quad core or and i7 especially if you ever plan on getting into programing, but then again that would be a waste if you do anything online and have a crappy ISP or Spy ware/ virus protection, because your connection or hardware gets bogged down due to spy ware it won't matter how good your CPU is it still won't operate those games at max out put.zanemalindeal
back to topic.... yes hes right . 100% however its impossible to be 100% internet safe unless you dont use it.. period cyber crime is always ahead of the game like it or not. its like overclocking.. always ahead of the cpu's its going to be used on.
thanks everyone. people on this board said if you use your pc for gaming then you don't really need a i7, your intel core duo or quad should do fine, but at toms hardware charts you can see the performance difference when using a i7.styledish173You don't really need an i7, YOU NEED AN i9. Mid of 2010, 6 cores + 6 HT threads =12 thread goodness... 1000 US dollars...

But are you upgrading because you can? Or are you upgrading because you need to?
An E8600 can easily handle the games you listed, IMHO, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade except for bragging rights.

True, but IIRC, the E8XXX series beats the Athlon II series clock for clock.

I said 4.5ghz, it's not even 4.1ghz. Find me one that's verified and over 4.5ghz. All kinds of Wolfdales are running 4.5 and even a bit higher on air.

Not "all". The older C0 E8400 and E8500 typically struggles at anything above 4.0GHZ without redlining the voltage.

With major over volt. I would never over volt my CPU that high, its a extremely risky move. You talk like all wolfdales hit above 4ghz. Infact a majority of overclocks can't break then 3.5 to 3.8 barrier.[QUOTE="hartsickdiscipl"]

While I agree that not all E8400s break or hit the 4GHz barrier, a good majority can, and at a moderately low voltage (below the Intel spec'd 1.36 volts). That was what the series was renowned for, having a good chance to hit or pass 4.0 GHz with little skill and troubleshooting (granted you have a moderately good motherboard and RAM setup).
Keep in mind that with every increase in clock speed, the voltage required goes up exponentially. So while going from 3.0 to 3.6 GHz will require little (if any) increase in voltage from stock, going from 4.0 to 4.6 will require a massive increase. I for one will certainly not run an E8400 at that speed for 24/7 use considering the voltage needed.

Infact a majority of overclocks can't break then 3.5 to 3.8 barrier. That's not what I said. If you look back to the start of our friendly debate, you'll see that we were talking about an E8600 specifically being the fastest dual-core available. I just started using the "Wolfdales" term because that's exactly what an E8600 is. I feel safe in saying that an average E8600 will overclock over 4ghz on air, yes.
But, if we're going to talk about the rest of the line-- the only reason I can't get my C0 E8400 much over 3.8ghz is due to my motherboard not letting me boot with my FSB set above 1700. It's a P43 chip, Asus P5QL Pro. Not too many people have gotten earth-shattering overclocks out of this board. My temps are at stock despite the fact that I'm running 1.26v, and the system is tested linpack stable.
