Shall I assume you've played Warcraft III? If not, definitely give that a look. Neither that nor AoE has the ridiculously fast pacing (a bit much for me personally) of the C & C series. Warcraft III is pretty fast paced in some ways. In fact, the leveling up and upkeep systems are basically designed to discourage "turtling", but it's not just a constant barrage of attacks and stuff blowing up as I sometimes feel the C & C games are.

AoE I could never get into based on the demos, so I don't know much about it. I don't think it's really like C & C in the slightest though. It seems far more plodding and methodical.

AOE III looks gorgeous, but C&C: FD is a much better deal and has some better games. Also for the price of AOE III: Gold, you can buy C&C: FD and AOE: collector's edition, which has the original AoE with expansion and Age of Kings + expansion. AoK is a better game than III, although it looks worse.

Why don't you pirate it...? It wouldn't cause any financial problems.

This is why we don't get the kind of support on the PC we deserve. This is why developers don't like putting things on the PC.

Because I want DRM free games. I don't want to be a hypocrite who vocally criticizes EA for putting DRM in spore while actually contributing to the reason they do that.

Red Alert 3 is a better game than all others mentioned in this thread except Warcraft III. It puts C&C 3 to absolute shame.

Red Alert 3 doesn't feel like a C&C game. EA enchanted the graphics a bit too much, especially with the actors.

Don't get WC3.

AOE 1 and 2 are classics; great for their time. AOE3 doesn't really feel very innovative, but it's not a bad game. I'd go with the First Decade here, but you may as well just buy the Red Alert games.

The first decade has some really great classics. If you are looking for modern RTS though, I would highly suggest getting Company of Heroes: tales of Valor if you like skirmish battles or get the whole package for the campaigns.
