I've got these two games to choose from for $20 at Staples, which should I choose?

For those uninformed, Oblivion GOTY Edition includes the two expansions. I've heard awful things about Mass Effect's DRM, too.

I am leaning towards one, but which is the better buy?

Oblivion , you can get more out of it especially with mod, and Shivering Isle expansion is also really good.

I'm a mod virgin, never done it in my life. Wouldn't mind starting, though.

I'd go with Oblivion, you get countless hours of content, plus it's really fun.

If you're going for more bang for your buck, you can't really beat Oblivion + the expansions for $20...Shivering Isles is better than the main game, imho. If you get all three games, I'd say go for it. The gameplay will last you a long time.

That said, Mass Effect was really good. It has a very strong story line and good game play...the story line for ME is better than that of Oblivion. It won't last you nearly as long, however...so if you're looking for a game with longevity, go with Oblivion.

Oblivion was the way I was leaning. Thanks everyone, looks like my mind is made up. And that link to all those mods should come in handy, thanks.

oblivion is illogical and an example of uninspired game design in quite a few aspects... a few gig of mods will largely fix it, but you won't get an rpg.. it's more of a n adventure game with crappy exploration (everything is utterly generico fantasy world you've seen a million times). Ai is stupid for both npcs and enemies, voice actors are horrible, dialogue is written by 10 year olds, the world is utterly static, combat is twitchy and far too easily exploitable, and some other stuff I don't want to continue to list. Get morrowind if you want an elder scrolls game, fallout 3 being a close second.

mass effect has a stronger story, more interesting setting, slightly better combat, and better writing than oblivion

Mass Effect without blinking. Oblivion was one of those games that the more I played it the less I enjoyed it. All of it's flaws became that much more visible to me. Mass Efefct on the other hand I enjoyed like no other game before it or since it.

You could probably get more game time out of Oblivion. Especially with the expansions.

Oblivion fo sho.

Really though, Oblivion wil please you. Especially if it's GOTY edition, because that comes with Shivering Isles (which is a hell of a lot of content in itself) and Knights of the Nine.

It's probably too late to change your mind, but I would not even hesitate to call Mass Effect a far better game than Oblivion (although I wasn't a fan of either, tbh).

I guess that Oblivion is just one of those 'love it/think it's absolutely terrible' sort of games, depending on the sort of RPGs you like and what else you've played.

If you're willing to take a day to download and install mods then Oblivion will be worth much more to you in the end. While the story and RPG elements are so much better in Mass Effect, I found it to be a one shot deal and after I completed it once never got around to really completing it again. Oblivion with mods will easily land you over a 100 hours of gameplay, and for some people it even doubles. Eventually get Mass Effect though, that one play through I had was an amazing experience.

if your looking for a game to entertain you for months and months, get oblivon, while it is lacking in a few areas it is fairly fun unless you are one of those hard core 30 year old fallout fanboys. Mass Effect is a better game imo, but its short, about 15 hours a play through if you don't rush or go slow on purpose, and its probably good for 2-3 playthroughs if you like it.

Get Oblivion, atleast there is some origonality in that one (altho not alot)

Mass effect suceeds in falling in every sci-fi chiché over its course.

+ Mods are easy for Oblivion (you can say the game was made with mods in mind) and it just has more content.

30 year old?

Dude.. I'm 18, and I played the original Fallout for days on end when it was released.. you don't have to be even near 30.

In fact, I only know one person who ever played it, that's near 30 now.

And I believe you were talking about 'Fallout 3', not 'Fallout' there's a huge difference in game play. Though I prefer the originals, I still think Fallout 3 was pretty well done.

Well it's not too late to change my mind, since I haven't been out to get either game yet. I've never been a huge RPG guy, but I felt I'd give 'em a fair chance. Maybe that changes things?

One thing to consider is the setting.

Oblivion takes place in a medieval fantasy world, while Mass Effect is a sci-fi game taking place in space.

Also Oblivion is very open ended so you have a lot to do, but it lacks a really good story. Mass Effect has a great story, which you can alter a little bit throughout by making some interesting choices. unfortunately, ME is not so open ended, and the side missions get boring. Oblivion's side missions are better than its main story line, like the thieve's guild quests and dark brotherhood quests which I found interesting.

I'd say... get both for 40$ and if you're like me, you won't need another game for half a year.

Edit: the DRM shouldn't be too much of a problem if you've got internet and a lot of hard drive space (for ME).
