Hey guys, just a random question. I own all of Half-Life 2 on Steam, and have played and finished Half-Life 1 before, but don't currently have the game in my possession. I was thinking of purchasing the game on Steam, but there are 2 different versions I can buy. The original, or the "source" version. Now I understand the source version just has improved lighting, water and physics, and it looks good, but which one do you guys think I should get.

The original or the source version?

Thanks.

If you're confident in your computer, I see no reason to pick the original over the Source version. Technically, they are both the same game. And, if you buy the Source version you get Half-Life Deathmatch: Source too. I think that's free though.

Just be aware that the Steam versions of Goldsrc (the HL1 engine) are extremely buggy.

I would recommend getting the Platinum Pack on Amazon instead; they don't require Steam. I love Steam and HL1, but the two just don't mix IMO.

But Amazon is only for US or Canadian citizens is it not??? Anyway, I think I might actually instead get the Half-Life 1 Anthology pack... it's only $14.99 and also has Opposing Force and Blue Shift which I have never played.

Can't say I have played the original Half-Life on the source engine. I would go for it. The source engine graphics are pretty decent for it's time, so why not?

You said a lot of things on Amazon I never felt good, better than the other stations to buy it! "it's only $14.99 and also has Opposing Force and Blue"It's only value for money

It doesn't update the graphics, just the engine. The water, lighting and physics.

I got the half life pack when it was like $3 a while ago and never encountered any bugs. Well I forced AA and it made the menus all weird, but other than that nothing strange happened.

You can fix the weird text in the menus and game by changing renderer to opengl... then it's flawless :)

That is the version I have, and the games in it are Steam. That's why I recommended the Half Life Platinum Pack instead. I wrote a review of the dreadful HL1 Anthology here.

Blue Shift has a fatal crash that I had to fix with mods, and if you don't live in the US Steam will download odd censored files that also mess up the game (I don't live in the US and it still downloaded them for me)

Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll rather get the source version of the game then.

Good graphics doesn't equal good gameplay. There's nothing wrong with Half-Life's original graphics... just enable AA and everything's fine. If you want to start Half-Life, I think you should start with the original. That mod is probably never going to be released anyway, I've heard it's the equivalent of Duke Nukem Forever for the modding community.

That might never get finished. I would just start playing the first game. The graphics are dated, but you will get used to them. I played it for the first time in 2007, and still thought it was a great game.

Well just incase anyone had a PS2 or DC and wanted to play it there, it has a lot better graphics on those systems. Not just like an update, but a complete overhaul of the graphics.

Maybe, but you can't play it on as high resolutions, with AA and a mouse & keyboard...

I second this. The PS2 port is fantastic, and even has quicksave/quickload and a sort of lockon aiming system to compensate for lack of mouse controls. I actually find it superior to the Steam HL1 release, just because it has no bugs. And it's better-textured and has higher poly models on the PS2, while the DC looks a little more lo-fi but has AA. I'd go with PS2 myself.

You can download the official HD pack for the PC version too.

It's not the same pack. It doesn't look nearly as good as the PS2 version, and it causes fatal crashes as well. I use a community-made graphics patch myself.
