Which Version of Vista is Best for Gaming?

XP is arguably best for games. Unless you have a monster PC, don't install Vista, it wouldn't be worth the cost.

To be honest, you're better off sticking with XP and only get Vista with a new PC later down the road, assuming Linux hasn't taken over the world by then :).

And don't worry, you're really not missing out on anything DirectX 10 wise. Until game engines are built from the ground up to take advantage of it we won't see anything good from it.

Well, I am getting a new rig tomorow, and its a pretty good one. I will install XP at first since it is the only OS I have at the moment. I always thought DirectX 10 makes a huge impact in terms of graphics, but judging by your reply, that assumption may be wrong.

In any case, these are the games I am more concerned about: Crysis, SupCom, World in Conflict and The Witcher. So I wouldn't be missing much by playing them on XP?

I think the best version of Vista to run is none of them. I plan on downgrading to xp as soon as I finish the current game i'm playing.pdkkbarnes1

Vista is terrible for games, so much so, that most games on the market now usually demand an extra gig of RAM if you're running under a Vista system. It truly is horrendous. Then Microsoft makes DX10 inusable for XP, and suddenly everyone thinks Vista is better for running games. :roll: Please.

I am currently using vista atm on 10+ gaming PC's, they all have vista on them currently, I HAVE HAD 0 problems with games on every one of them. if u disable UAC you will have no problems, vista is good with games, drivers have been good for it as well, I have used vista for over a year now, and i dont have any of the problems people seem to have :roll:

anyways, vista has improved greatly with Service pack 1, i have it installed on 2 systems atm, speeds up alot of things, and people that supposedly had issues before with some things are saying different now. i have noticed some speed changes on general use, and copying files after installing SP1.

dx10 on games such as world in conflict is a night and day difference with DX10, also crysis looks great with DX10, and they have yet to unlock all the features for it because current hardware cant run the higher features at all really.

I have used vista for over a year like i said, and i have not looked back and thought of going back at all. I have always had a great vista experience, I hope you chose to get vista as well, and dont use old XP.

anyways to answer your question:

unless you really want poweruser/advanced IT/gimmicks (ultimate), get home premium, it works great, and has every feature you'd want out of vista.

You have to get at least premium due to the aero desktop graphics. They use your GPU instead of your CPU and also use less memory.

As for the haters, just get it and ignore all that crap. Every poll around here has Vista winning out. I have had it on my laptop and desktop for like 8 months now with ZERO problems. Most of the people you see with a negative opinion on Vista don't even have it on a system, they are jus repeating crap they heard. And the 3GB thing is a flat out lie, 2GB is just fine. I ran Crysis with near maxed out with a 2GB system. When will this silliness stop?

I had constant memory issues with several games including The Witcher, MOHA, and COH runnig at only 2GB or RAM. Since I upgraded my PC to my current specs I haven't had any issues.

Well, I am confused more than I was before creating this thread :P. My PC will have 4 gigs of ram, so RAM won't be an issue.mon_bus

With that much RAM you shouldn't have any memory issues. I've been running Vista since it was first released and it has only gotten better with time.
