There isn't much benchmark information out there for those cards, however, I'd guess the Radeon is little better.

According to this page, the Radeon is a class 2 card, while the GeForce is a class 3 (all of the 8400M models, they don't specifically list the GX model though).

If you want any chance of gaming, go for the 2600.

the 2600 is significantly better than the 8400m gx, but is on part with the 8600.

If he's going for DX10, the 2600XT is obviously better than the 8600GT. However, I'm not sure if the 2600 is an XT or a PRO. I'd still wager that it'd be better than a 8400, though.

The 2600 has 256MB dedicated memory verses 128MB on the 8400. Get the one with the 2600 if you're going to use if for gaming.

I know ATi and Nvidia's DX10 unified architecture are vastly different, but from reading up on both mobile DX10 offerings, I can theorize that ATi has a better offering for the mobile market.
