Which were the most played multiplayer FPS games before this era

Hello!

By this era I mean before CoD 4,before Half Life 2,approximately at Half Life era.Let's say in the 90's.Were people playing the old Doom games?

And was the internet used as vastly as now or people were playing on LAN?

I remember what I played most from the FPS genre ... Doom 1/2 Blood 1/2 Quake 1/2 Kingpin Half Life Wolfenstein 3D Heretic 1/2 Hexen 1/2 and as for multiplayer ... LAN parties all the way ! The internet connection wasn't that good for online play that much - not to mention not much games had good support, while with LAN connectivity everything was perfect, no drop-outs due to crappy internet connection and such :)

Counter-Strike (still is); Medal of Honor (the old ones); Call of Duty (the old ones, that were actually good); Doom and Quake.

I personally played the original Tribes a lot, at least 40 hrs a week for a couple of years, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was also one of my favorites.

Multiplayer in the 90s?

For me that would be Quake 2, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Jedi Knight and Soldier of Fortune

In the early 2000s, I played a lot of Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault and the original Call Of Duty.
