Desktop: Mainly Linux but I use Windows when I feel like playing some games.
Laptop: Linux
Netbook: Linux
is linux reliable?, i have looked into it once a long time ago but i know linux isnt fully 100%, like most stuff wont work etc.
If you just need to web surf and word process than Ubuntu 10.04 is incredibly easy to set-up and shouldn't require any extra tinkering. It comes with Firefox and Open Office already installed. Also most hardware should be supported. You will really only run into problems if you happen to come across hardware that isn't supported out of the box.is linux reliable?, i have looked into it once a long time ago but i know linux isnt fully 100%, like most stuff wont work etc.

Since switching to Linux in March I haven't looked back (I still game on Windows 7 though). I started with Ubuntu 9.10, then I tried Debian, and finally I switched to Mint 9 (which is a, I think, an improvement over Ubuntu). I use Mint 9 for work (open office covers all my needs), web surfing (no different from windows), image editing (GIMP is not photoshop but it also covers all my needs), music and video (Audacious or Rythmbox for music and VLC for video), chatting (empathy and pidgin cover that very well), etc.
I won't claim that Linux distros are overall better than Windows but they come very close for most applications and are sometimes better than Windows in some aspects. They are also free of charge. I also prefer the freedom Linux provides and prefer GNOME over microsoft's desktop environment.
At the very least, give Linux another chance. You might stick with windows in the end but I still recommend giving it a chance. You can use a live CD to test it if you don't want to install.
for everyday use its pretty bullet proof. its very poor at recovering from games crashing though (but then every OS is). for me i just use windows for gaming. for everything else i use linux distros.....ubuntu 10.04 at the mo. outside of gaming i have no reason to use windows.is linux reliable?, i have looked into it once a long time ago but i know linux isnt fully 100%, like most stuff wont work etc.

What is with all the windows fanboys lol? The only reason I even use Linux is for games. And once steam starts supporting linux here soon that will probably change. Windows is just terrible as an OS. Its unresponsive unstable and annoying. Linux is much better. And mac? Really? Macs are overpriced paper weights. Not ever a reason to use them. Everything on Mac is on windows also. And linux for that matter.I wish devs would support linux more. And to even vote on this there should be like a requirment that you actually have to use linux for a few weeks and actually know how to use, fix, destroy, build, computers and make a mean sandwich.KLONE360it wont be free anymore, if devs start to focus on it, like if it becomes popular like windows

Linux itself will be free. The programs on it might not be (although I'm pretty sure that open-source programs will always be around).
Canonical have been worrying me lately with their shop thing. They are essentially going to be selling small apps and programs. I might be overreacting but I can't see anything good coming from this development.
it wont be free anymore, if devs start to focus on it, like if it becomes popular like windows Wut The Linux kernel will ALWAYS be open source due to GPL. Distros don't have to be.[QUOTE="KLONE360"]What is with all the windows fanboys lol? The only reason I even use Linux is for games. I am not going to vote, I need Linux and Windows. Mac, not so much.

I think the majority don't have them.

ok no, i hate the whole app thing, thats why i never choose linux, but it does look decent, but i hate how it has to have its own app store for gettign stuff and then they may not be free, what about just using regular programs]The majority of applications don't have GUIs in Linux? Heh?JigglyWiggly_Perhaps it's just the ones i use... Anyway from what i've seen if you go off the beaten track you quickly get into command line but with windows it's very very rare for that to happen. For example i just booted up Backtrack and launched 4 random apps, only one of them had a GUI.
Ok this is all I have to say: BACKTRACK What do you expect? They even mentioned they don't want GUIs so complete idiots don't start using the tools. Though, there's always cain and abel for that.
Backtrack, doesn't represent any of Desktop Linux. It's a vulneribility scanner/hacking utility... I just install the packages it uses on my laptop, I mean same thing... just more work.
Well its pretty much universally agreed that OSX is THE best OS from when all things are taken into consideration.
As it doesent support custom hardware or proper gaming I need Windows but I would love to migrate if it was possible.
Why would you bother doing it that way when you already run Debian, surely it would be quicker to just add the few regular apps you want to Backtrack.I just install the packages it uses on my laptop, I mean same thing... just more work.

Yeah, except there are a lot of applications in Backtrack, not to mention the special drivers to force the wireless card into sniff mode.I just install the packages it uses on my laptop, I mean same thing... just more work.

What on earth are you doing for it to be so unstable and unresponsive? This seems more like a fanboy rant then anything legitimate. Windows is a fine OS, OSX is good too though I don't like their interface. Linux is fine for anything non game related but since it's open source and there are a million versions of Linux there is no real standard for developers to follow and while one program might work with one version of Linux, it may be buggy or not working in another.

The Linux kernel manages programs better than Windows, programs compiled for old ass kernels of Linux will still work today, however the dependencies of the libs they rely on, might not be installed, which is why debs and rpms were created. There are lots of standards lol... Is it good for gaming? Nope... Also Linux doesn't just drop support for hardware which infuriates me with Windows, I can even run some programs in Wine: As in I can play x wing vs tie fighter in wine with my gameport joystick, which doesn't even work in Windows Vista+, they dropped support for gameport.[QUOTE="KLONE360"]What is with all the windows fanboys lol? Win 7 - all around versatility
OSX - just slightly more polished than Win 7 although not enough to make a difference.
Linux - pretty decent. But, it just doesn't have the commercial support Windows and OSX have.
Add: I'd put OSX slightly above most Windows versions prior to Win 7.
Windows: - most common OS that users worldwide use it
- not too expensive compared to mac
- user friendly gui
bad things: always vulnerable to various malwares and spywares, BSOD and so on.
Mac : - at least that i know about it such as used for work and profesional purposes
Linux: - zero percent virus threats, free open source OS, useful for people with a very limited budget but wanted a new pc.
Ok, every OS have thier own mascots, right like Linux with the cute penguin, Windows 7 with anime chick mascot, but how about mac? Does apple have thier mascot for thier OS?

Windows 7 has an anime chick mascot? Why haven't I seen this? As for Apple, I would assume that it is some unshaven dude with a black turtleneck, tight jeans, and black-rim glasses.linux just isnt fully 100%, it may be able to run basic programs and such but, to use as a primary solution for everyday use, for months and months, hmm i dont know
This post is worthless, not 100%? Not 100% for what lawl? Linux is a kernel, the operating system is not Linux. PS, Windows doesn't have a mascot other than the Windows logo, no anime chick... Macs have an apple as their mascot. FreeBSD has a daemon(which is funny if you are super nerdy).linux just isnt fully 100%, it may be able to run basic programs and such but, to use as a primary solution for everyday use, for months and months, hmm i dont know
