I had a computer with all open-box products from newegg.com. It had a 8800GTX when it was considered as a new item. I'm sure I can do it again with a 4890 for $130-$150 and cheap x58 open box motherboards.

You have a point, but the fact still remains that a pre-built still can hold a lot of bad computer parts in order to make it cheap. Here's my attempt at this build. It's 560 w/ taxes and shipping, but I think it'll hold for a good while.

Link $503

Frenzyd109

Might want to fix your link. That only links to the shopping cart on newegg that is saved on the recipient's computer. We won't be able to see the parts that you picked. Save it in a wishlist, make it public, and fix the link to it so we can all see it. I'm interested personally as to what you came up with :P

problems with your build ultimate. Video card is weak and PSU is non-brand. But rest looks good. Broke the Golden Rules.

First of all my friend Raidmax is a decent brand but can you find one better for the price? Also the 9600 GSO is not skimpy in fact it matches and even beats the 4670. Second of all your motherboard and case are crap! never ever skimp on the motherboard because the northbridge chipset is a huge part of your gaming performance. Also that case has POOR air circualtion, and it's small and flimsy as well.

I agree the MB I mentioned before wasnt good but this one is. However no matter what you say I will not allow you to lie about Raidmax being a decent brand. Only of course if you are running really low end GPU then sure you can get away with junk PSU but any card that requires a 6 pin connector should not run on a low brand like Raidmax. Since you have been building computers for awhile I was sure you knew about this and the case airflow isnt %100 important if you dont overclock settings which I assumed this person asking wasnt going to so a skimpy case is no where near as bad as a skimpy PSU. I have built many computers with skimpy cases and none of them has any heating issues whatsoever and I mean skimpy like $18 cases from the local computer store. I never said the 9600GSO is bad I meant skimpy by meaning that cutting down on less essential parts and putting more towards GPU will result in better gaming performance as the GPU is the major factor for game performance. Now I had no idea if you took offense from my critique of your suggestion and maybe you just used crap because thats what came to mind but I assure you everything in my post is with 0 hostility. I just want to emphasize that poor PSU is risky and of course its cheap but like the saying goes "you get what you pay for". However, if you have done extensive research on this brand and found many sources which say that this PSU is substantial then by all means recommend it.

So with this board it is $500. I notice that I forgot optical drive so $520 then.

I hope you or your friend don't live in CA, NJ, or TN, cause sales tax will put this over $500 :)

SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223B - OEM $30.99
COOLER MASTER ELITE 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $39.99
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM $79.99
ECS BLACK SERIES GF8200A (V1.0) AM2+/AM3 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $69.99 w/ $20 MIR
MSI R4850-2D512-OC Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail $99.99 w/ $15 MIR
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ400SXS 400W ATX12V Active PFC Power Supply - Retail $39.99 w/ $15 MIRC (Mail-in rebate card)
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM $6.99
PNY XLR8 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model MD4096KD2-800-X4 - Retail $59.99 w/ $15 MIR
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor Model ADX620WFGIBOX - Retail $99.00
Rosewill RFX-120 120mm Case Fan - Retail $7.99

Subtotal: $534.91
Shipping: $10.71
Total: $545.62

Mail in Rebates: $50
Mail in Rebate Card: $15

Grand Total (w/ Rebate Card): $480.62 (without rebate card): $495.62

This build assumes you won't pay sales tax, and you don't mind the rebate hassle. The rebate card can be redeemed for cash/check as well but it's a bit more effort.

If you don't need the quad-core Athlon for multi-threaded stuff, you can swap it for a X3 720 BE for $20 more and get better gaming performance, which would put the total @ $500.62 with the rebate card :)

I actually ordered this today, minus the optical drive, so I just added whatever was rated well in the top-sellers at Newegg.

500 is not a massive budget, my advice is to hit ebay. you can get stuff very very cheap there. some of the stuff is even still under warranty.

The AMD X4 620 is actually the best processor you can use based on a budget like this.
