I jumped for while in doom III but after a while the leaping out got repetative. Fear didnt scare me, it felt sorta halflife like.
I must say, when you play doom III on easy, you dont really engage yourself in the game because there is no real challange, when i played it on the harder difficulty setting, that's when i jumped, because you die alot easyer.
Scarest game though, system shock 2 without a doubt.
doom 3 and f.e.a.r are both good for shock - making you jump, but shock is the cheapest and lowliest element on the horror spectrum
i did not find doom 3 or f.e.a.r scary at all, they made me jump, certainly, but that is just a reflex reaction - evoking an emotion in someone takes talent beyond what id and monolith are capable of
now, i appreciate that some people may feel something while playing those games, but i simply do not believe it is fear - i appreciate that fear is a very subjective emotion, you only have to look at one of these threads to see how different people are affected by different things... but i find it hard to believe that people could truly, honestly define what they experience as fear - and not simply shock
Doom III wasn't scary to me. I mean, it was hard to see but that was about it. I was actually relieved when I got to hell because I could finally see without a flashlight. Loved the game though.
FEAR scared the crap out of me the first time I played it. I remember I'd get so freaked out that I'd basically run through every room until I ran into a swarm of enemies. It only got worse towards the end.
Well neither game really scared me in any way except for like startleing you when something would jump out catch you off guard.
If you want to play a game that will make you really jumpy, nervous and needing to pee at times...
play- Condemned: Criminal origins
I'm looking for it right now so I can play it again... It might not have the most up to date graphics but the feel of it is great!
Here's a gameplay video of it if anyone cares to watch:

Doom 3 - Shock value scares early on.
FEAR - Increasing shock value scares throughout.
That's a good summary of how scary. But if you want a scary level, try "The Cradle" in Thief: Deadly Shadows. That's scary than anything these two pulled out of their hats.

I agree completely, the Shalebridge Cradle was by far the sacriest level/map I've come across yet. It wasn't as bad the third and fourth time through but the first two times it had my skin crawling.
Doom3 and FEAR were rather dissapointing in terms of spookiness.
STALKER has a better atmosphere and is a lot more creepy than Doom3 and FEAR combined. The only other game i've played with a creepy atmosphere that works is Aliens vs Predator.
Neither really scares me, spooks me, or makes me extra tense; but I do get that emotion of slight uneasiness when playing them (thankfully, as that's part of the entertainment). Doom 3 has that aura of dread throughout it, sometimes escalating at points to a terror deep within the heart. FEAR has a more cerebral horror, trying to play with your mind and make you lose your will. Granted, Doom 3 has a few cerebral elements in there a few times, as well, but it isn't the focus.
Both of those games are tense...Doom 3 honestly scared me a couple of times. It made me jump in my seat. Creatures jumping at you in the darkness is always good for a start.
I wasn't aware there was any footage or screenshots of Project Origin released yet, Subzero.JP_Russell
Holy crap dude, your missing out.. Go to gametrailers.com they have 17 minutes of the demo that was released on the Xbox360 of the game.. As well as other videos.. I was surprised at this too, the game after all was just announced really..
Doom 3 really scared me when I first played it. I got used to it after a while. Like others have said, enemies jumping out of nowhere got repetitive. After a while, the player is almost always ready for anything and that decreases the potential scariness.
F.E.A.R. was only slightly scary for a little while. For the most part, the "scary stuff" can't hurt the player.
