have you been able to try the disks in another PC? If they work in that then you can say your cd drive is on the way out. My PC from 5 years ago started doing that where a lot of disks were not reading (sometimes nothing would happen, sometimes you could hear a whiny noise and it would try to read but no luck).
Otherwise you have some dud disks and should try and exchange them. Oh the only other thing I can think of is if you have something like daemon tools you should try uninstalling it as it does create some of its own device driver things.

Ease up, I dont think they wrote like that on purpose, noticed some of my messages a few days agoafter posting had the whitespaces removed.
As for your firmware yes be careful as you can screw it up, but just find out what model cd drive you have then refer to the manufacturers website.
