My brother has become engulfed into the world of online fantasy and role-play. I feel kinda sorry for him. He's even gotten to the point of spending actual money to buy clothes and home decor - inside this Simified reality. Oh by the way, hes 40y/o. Ive never been interested in such a game, and still not.

However, since ive never really tried anything like it- i went ahead with the Free Download, and messed around fora couple of hours. There are a few neat things about it - but nothing at all i'll be taking up much time in.

What i really wanted to mention is - how Serious sooo many people actually take this game? Folks put so much of thier life, time and money into this. I really dont understand these folks ? I figured this out as soon as i started. Folks commented on my appearance--haha. It baffled me how much people in the virual environment make such a huge deal out of this game?

Do any of you ever play this?
I have a lot of negative comments about it - but no need for others who play or are interested in playing hear my thoughts. I just dont understand the mass appeal to such a thing. There are some neat things about it - but overall, geez - I just dont understand....

Nope, my cousin bugged me to play with him a few years ago, but it was a horrible experience, I gave up in less than 2 hours, I went with the "oh sorry I got a virus, some files got corrupted and I can't play it" :P.

After that I saw it on TV, CSI NY...god it was horrible, they ruined half of this already not spectacular episode (not like the series is, but it's decent) and if that wasn't enough they made the Adam guy obsessed with it...

Then you hear some random stories, people buy virtual stuff worth 100Ks $ and you go ***** this, people should get a "new" life.

If I was you I would give your brother a big wake up call. I can assure you, no one here plays that mess. I read about this couple in some Asian country that were so engulfed in the game and raising their virtual daughter that they let their REAL baby daughter die. So very sad.

I started working on a project called opensim earlier this year and had to investigate second life. All I had heard about it was negative and initially I felt quite wierd walking around the world with furries and people dressed in leather and spikes. The more I talked to the people in the world however the more I got a better understanding of second life. What I came to realise is that second life is a platform for limitless self expresion, you can be whatever your heart desires like no where else. Although I'll never spend any extended periods of time in the world I do understand why people do.

Second life is not so much a game as it is a platform.

I normally tend to avoid Online games, but I was curious about this game everybody was talking about (even the News was talking about it)...

I downloaded and damn what a piece of s***! Terrible mechanics, graphics, but the worst part that I thought I entered crazy land! People where flying, changing their clothes every 3 seconds, doing strange actions (dance, dance, hello! dance, hi want to dance with me?... NOOOO!) you see groups of people acting weird asking weird questions. Every place I visited was more f**** up than another...

What do people do there I don't know, I trashed the game immediately, really it is like entering a totally smoked reallity, never again... never again.

Yeah-i saw a lot of perverted nastyness going on everywhere i stumbled to as well. Seems that 90% of this game is all about the perversions of people. My bro was telling me about him having women slaves. And these are real women. For some reason - chicks out there really get off at having someone leading them around those worlds by a chain leash. Literally--a chain leash around thier neck. Some really sick individuals out there.

I had to use it for a university assignement.

Second Life is an abomination.

Over-hyped social networking tool, based around glorified e commerce that is not popular whatsoever.

EVE Online = a persistent online universe, something where players make an impact and have real influence.
Second Life = a social networking fad that was never popular to begin with.

As per usual the mainstream media is well behind the 8-Ball in actually knowing the proper evolution of things on the web. /rant.

That was exactly my point, I really feel like in the Blade Runner Movie: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...

Thing with Second Life is that it isn't a "game"... It's a business-simulation, mainly so that people who have a lot of money can spend it and make more of it on virtual things. I once tried it and stumbled round for a while, but aside from being a digital tourist attraction, it serves little entertainment value.

For the couple hours i messed around with it, aside from checking out all the nudity and weirdness , there are a couple of neat aspects. Like, if you've never been to Paris and seen the Eiffel tower - someone had made it to scale, and really gives you a sense of what its like. It also gives you a sense of how far a fall would be if you jumped off - lol.

There are countless tourist type areas like that all over. Amusement parks and celebrity homes. For what its worth - in sort of interesting, but once u've gone to a couple of those sites the interest is quickley short lived.

Someone mentioned the graphics. They dont really seem all that bad - its just the Rendering is ungodly awful. It takes so long to start seeing objects, and when ur trying to walk around - it glitches like mad and throws you all over the place. And appearantly a decent graphics card makes no difference what so ever. Whether you set everything to best performance or best quality - i never really saw a difference. I have1gb 5770 - and no matter how i changed the graphics, the time it took to view your surroundings was still abismal.

EDIT:Another thing - this 'game' IMO - is set mostly for folks who have no real idea how game apps should work...What things like Bandwidth and Rendering should and shouldnt do. Im sure they dont understand Clipping either, cause that drives me crazy even in high quality games....

While there is a lot of pornography and what you've seen and experienced, there are a lot of intriguing aspects to the "game". You can see many sights, see people's designs and businesses, as well as play a large assortment of games people coded into the world. What's pretty cool is that there is a social outlet for whatever interest you might have. I listen to metal and such and I looked up a very well-done metal club in the game. The music, layout and design of the club itself, and the overall look of everything was top notch. Treat it really as a playground. There are a lot of places that ban all the smut and crap, so it's easy to avoid that stuff if you wish to do so.

I only played it for about a week years ago, but there were some memorable experiences. Such as during the President Elections of 04 and one of the canditates held a speech within the game, and a group of players spawned hundreds of 3D penises to float around the candidate. Look it up. :)

Slap your brother in the face, say 'What are you doing with your life! You're 40 years old if you keep this up your future will drift away!' There's a good documentary you could rent or tell him to rent, it's called Second Skin, may open his eyes.

I remember a quote from it by a researcher of mmo's and social behavior, he said 'In the future virtual worlds and avatars will be more appealing to people than their daily life, they will place more value into these avatars than into themself.'

I haven't played, but I assume that game world in the movie "Gamer" is probably very similar (i.e. ridonkulous)

Gamer was awesome :P we WILL have such graphics and physics, and everything, that was an example of how real motion detection systems should look, perform like, what Sony and MS made so far is....scary, weird, awkward, shameful.

Of course, except for the actual humans being used as NPCs or characters :P.

I played it a long time ago. For errr 30 minutes... After that I uninstalled it.

edit: 1 more thing.. I just don't get it why people spend money on a 'free' MMO
