Who wants Punkbuster to die?

I hate Punkbuster SOOOO much. Ok honestly is it just me or does it feellike punkbuster was developed by 2 highschool special ed students as a tech project? i have never had a game with punkbuster go right

Punkbuster is good and bad

I havent been able to play BC2 since retail hit because of a constant PB error, doing every solution known to the internet. EA is pretty reluctant to give me anything even after I made a fraps recording of it, sent them all the diagnostic stuff they asked for, etc. I dont know if it's them or PB, but it sucks either way.

It's not EA, it's DICE, Evenbalance did all they could to eliminate every single problem PB had on BC 2, but they can't fix the broken game, not even DICE can (they could but they choose not to).

Anyway, I "almost" don't like PB because I did have some problems with it, well only one, it's pretty unstable, it can kick you for 0 minutes for absolutely no reason, when you sometimes have a few lag spikes, not the kind that cause a visible delay, even less intense spikes, but it's arguably the best at the moment.

Not me it keeps all of the damn cheaters out of a multiplayer match and I LIKE THAT!Hekynn

PUNKBUSTER MUST DIE!!!!!! Okay, here is an average evening for me. Come home. Open BATTLEFIELD HEROES. Wait 60 secconds to get logged in. Hit "Play now" Wait 2 minutes to load the map. Map loads. Start playing with a perfect 3mps connection. Attempt to shoot a player. Game freezes. Wait 30 secconds for the game to tell me I was KICKED BY PUNKBUSTER for "heartbeats stopped". Attempt to play again. Wait 60 seconds to 3 minutes for another map to load. Start game. Play for about a minute, then use a healing item. Game freezes. "KICKED BY PUNKBUSTER". I have just waisted 15 minutes of my life. RAGE

No matter what you think, Punkbuster is the best we got. There needs to be something better though, it doesn't get the job done by itself most of the time.

I have never experienced Punkbuster problems.. Except for with the BC2 beta.. but that was a beta. So, no, I do not have a desire to kill Punkbuster.

Edit: Actually, I remember when I played BC2 a while ago, and about 10 people on the same server got banned for using an aimbot. That was awesome. Go Punkbuster!

You gotta hand it to Valve, VAC is a good myth, it scares most of the cheater wannabes and when it decides to work, people get banned in less than...3 months :P. PB on the other hand is no myth, it works and unlike VAC, PB hacks are hard to conceal from PB and crackers/hackers devote a lot of time for making such hacks and 99% of the time they sell them and that stops even more of the cheater wannabes...those that buy them....horrible people, what's so fun in cheating? >_> For VAC all you need to do to cheat it is to know your ways around the internet and have a decent understanding of the PC but thank god there aren't many that want to cheat on Valve games, they at least keep it off VAC servers (more or less).DanielDust

Don't twist the meaning, VAC doesn't work and people don't cheat on it because they're affraid to lose their games (misinformation is strong when it's about Steam and VAC).

And I don't really care about glitches, caused by Steam, since I don't have any PB game on Steam and glitches caused by third party applications don't magically make the actual system worse.

Latest example of VAC use, MW 2, safe to say that it's as if it didn't have an anti-cheat system and for games like CS 1.6, Source, TF 2 VAC doesn't stop absolutely any cheater that "really" wants to cheat and those "real" cheaters will never be detected by VAC. Just because it's made by Valve doesn't mean that it actually works.

Well, in this case , its steam who does bad job integrating its overlay. There is no Steam only games which use PB , so its your choice and if you choose to go with steam and get baned coz they cant make it work - its your problem and not pb.

Yea, you would expect for human to learn and not repeat same mistake (waste 15 minutes every night) .

Never had a single problem with Punkbuster.

I like PB because it works I don't like it because it hates steam/vent, fix the latter and I would be very happy with it.

I remember when punkbuster was a standalone client program for CS 1.3 and you had to download each additional update manually... Load it before joining PB Servers... That was a terrible program. It litterally didn't catch ANYONE, and effectly caused a lot of problems for the legitamate end users. I don't think its come a long way since then either. I bought Bad Company 2, I liked the game and gave it a shot. I quit playing because of punkbuster. It doesn't catch hacks, has services running on my computer (service(s) plural) for no reason even when I havn't loaded a PB enabled game for MONTHS... I mean seriously does this **** ass program have all of you brainwashed speaking up for it now to? It was bad enough when developers picked it up... I remember punkbuster being almost immediately shunned and gotten rid of by allllllll CS admins back then, for another more popular anti-cheat detection programs (HLG) and methods.

It's hard to take the topic creator seriously when he or she hasn't even given a reason why Punkbuster should not be used. In my experience, I see it as a necessary feature for multi-player games as the question "what else can we use" has no answer. Modern Warfare 2 has shown that VAC can be unreliable as the system depends on the support of the game developer which may no longer care about their previous or current titles. If there is one game that VAC works, then its Counter Strike from Valve, but Valve is a unique company that invests heavily into its previous titles unlike most developers.

On the other hand Punkbuster has generally been reliable as its support is based on Evenbalance, the company/group that develops Punkbuster; a group solely dedicated to updating and maintaing the Punkbuster system. In addition, Punkbuster does offer features to server adminstrators such as the ability to capture screenshots of what each player is seeing.

For me, what Punkbuster is lacking is its way of updating to the latest version and the use of two processes that is independent of the game that's running it. It's very difficult to know when a client has an outdated version of Punkbuster and usually PB takes a long time to update automatically; it's generally easier and faster if the client manually updates PB. As mentioned, PB has to run on two processes and that could lead to technical problems such as maybe another program or software blocking such processes or one of the two not even starting up once the game is running.

Nothing wrong with PB. The only problem that ever comes up with PB is becouse I forgot to update it.

I cant play BF2 because I always get kicked by PB.

Punkbuster is fine, it can be annoying sometimes and I hate being kicked from a game because I have the Steam overlay enabled (happens in CoD4). However Punkbuster has given me the satisfaction of seeing around 4 hackers for every few hours I play be banned right in front of me, something that Vac has never done. Because of Vacs delayed bans, which don't work well for MW2 because there are no dedicated servers for admins to ban hackers with while they are waiting for them to get banned by Vac.

Nope, not modded. I haven't had any problems with BC2. Oddly enough I had no problems with Punkbuster during the new UI beta. It's not game breaking or anything, but it's annoying to have to remember to turn off overlay every time I play and turn it back on after
