AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition

Stock clock: 3.2GHz

Cores: 6

Cache: 9mb

Price: $355

Intel Core i7 980 Extreme

Stock clock: 3.33GHz

Cores: 6

Cache: 12mb

Price: $1419

(prices in AUD)

Why is Intel's top CPU about four times the price of AMD's top CPU, when its only a little bit more powerful?

Do Intel chips overclock higher than AMD?

You can't compare 2 CPUs by looking only at their clock speeds.A pentium 4 has 3 Ghz speed but a core i7 920 has 2.6 Ghz.Does that mean P4 is more powerful?Nope.

the i7's use less cycles to complete tasks im assuming, they are lightning fast compared to equal number of cores and same clockspeed of a P4. Intel are higher quality and AMD just make high speed value chips. Don't get me wrong AMD can perform amazingly but intel's new chips are a lot more complicated and are a brand new design to get the best performance at lower speeds.

that's an i7 extreme which has an unlocked multiplier so of course it will be more expensive. all intel CPUs that have an unlocked multiplier have been much more expensive than those with locked multipliers.

look at reviews that do real world comparisons to see the real differences. I lost faith in AMD during previous generations of chips while they were rating theirs according to what they thought they were equivalent to on Intel ratings. Things may well have improved in the last 5 years, but I currently have an Intel Core 2 Quad and very happy with its performance, so nothing much compelling me to go back to AMD

Plain and simple, Intel is ahead of AMD in terms of technology and performance per watt/clock. Because they also have a much larger rapport with mainstream consumers who only know of Intel (thanks to marketing mainly) they can sell their chips at a substantially higher price in most cases to computer manufacturers since people will look for machines with Intel. As for the performance gap, yeah Intel is beating the collective **** out of AMD with the i7s, but they are typically very expensive and even the i3 and i5s are somewhat expensive compared to their AMD counterparts/competitors when the motherboards start at $90. I'm an AMD man when it comes to building desktops, and I go for mostly Intel based laptops. Despite as such had I wanted to build a computer right now, I would be very enticed to build an i5-750 based system.

B.c Intel charges a higher price to feed their research & developement of cpu :) thats why they are ahead of the curve on tech and well their kind of expensive. AMD is geared towards gaming and price:performance, you get less, but if you only game thats all you need.

Thats what i wondered too, my amd quad core processor @2.8ghz was cheaper than the intel quad @ like 2.4ghz but i was told it was because that processor has a better cache (L3 instead of L2)...hmm :S

Anyone who knows anything about computer hardware would tell you to buy the lowest core i7 which is the core i7-920 and then overclock it to about 3.2 ghz. Its cost efficient and faster than the amd chip you listed...also cheaper i believe.

From a consumer standpoint that doesn't know so much about PC hardware, I would say that marketing as a huge part in it. People see "Intel" and their eyes go big. For the most part, consumers see AMD and they think it's alien code for "GTFO." :P I prefer AMD, now that I've researched more on it. And it's a lot cheaper too!

That Intel CPU is a lot more powerful, in areas other than gaming. :D You can't measure the power of some hardware solely based on gaming.

Per Core,

1. Intel i7 has two 128bit wide SSE ADD and one 128 bit wide SSE MUL. Intel's Hyper-threading can maximize the second SSE ADD unit.

2. Like the Intel's Core 2, AMD Phenom II has one 128bit wide SSE ADD and one 128bit wide SSE MUL.

What's the difference between a BMW and Ford?

Bologna or Roast Beef?

K-mart shoes or Jordans?

87 or 93 octane gas?

Simple answer - You get what you pay for

The Core i7 980X is a good bit more powerful than AMD's hexacore cpu's. They are about even in gaming but cpu's aren't as important as the gpu is in most games. However, in other tasks like video encoding, 3d rendering and other workstation related tasks the 980X is clearly the superior cpu over all other desktop cpu's. Intel pretty much is able to set their prices whereas AMD usually has to keep their prices lower in order to compete with Intel. Some of it is due to marketing and some of it is due to performance.

LOL.. I see what you're saying, but it's not quite the same in the CPU world.

What I'm getting at is that there really isn't a "quality" difference between Intel and AMD per se. Intel's top-end CPUs typically do outperform AMD's in most tasks, sometimes by a wide margin. But when it comes to gaming, AMD is the bang for the buck king. You can spend $280+ on an i7, or you can spend $160 on a Phenom II X4. Either one will get you smooth performance in all games when paired with the right GPU.

AMD hasn't had a fundamental change in their cpu architecture since the athlon 64s first came out. And intel core i line is relatively new.

If it hadn't have been for AMD intel would be making 6GHz single core processors that are about as powerful as 1 core of an i7.

K-Mart shoes and Jordans. I lol'ed. At one point or another in my life, I went from K-mart to Jordans when I was a kid. I can relate. :P Anyways, I think most people have the right idea here. Intel = gaming and other areas. AMD = gaming and if you dont use it for other stuff.

There are now i7s on the 1156 socket, I think the lowest one is the 870 or something.

The way the CPU comparisons are right now is the i7 line is in a performance teir all it's own at the top.

The Phenom II x4's are in the performance teir below the i7's and compete with the i5's and the Core 2 Quads.

And traditionally, AMD just seems to be cheaper than Intel has been, thats not to say their processors are bad. If you are looking at Price vs Performance both companies have very good choices for that. I dont see the reason though in making a proccessor that costs well over 1000$ (the i7 980X). I could build a whole computer for that.
