I can remember cursing GFWL for constantly crashing and failing to update Fallout 3. Although in retrospect, I would have probably been happier if I had been unable to play it so maybe GFWL was trying to give me a hint.
Part of the reason it isn't the norm for games to have it is because originally it was microsoft's way of charging for multiplayer. Once they realized that idea was even dumber than requiring vista for dx10 and that hardly anyone was using it, they made it free.
it failed because when it first came out they try to charge people money for it like the 360 crowd, after that no one gave a crap about it on the pc.. also playing multiplayer games together was a hassle compared to an already better system, steam

beat me to it.
Wow they were charging to play online.... on PC? A platform which has had online games since the 90s? hah good move Microsoft!Part of the reason it isn't the norm for games to have it is because originally it was microsoft's way of charging for multiplayer. It started off as a literal copy of Xbox Live, and cost some so the initial popularity didn't exist. Then it didn't really get up to the curb of PC gamer wants with it's clunky menus and lack of any suitable chat features. That and it ended up being buggy for games like DoW 2.
With Steam as a much more popular and streamlined platform for PC gamers, GFWL fell out of the competition.
If it's strictly the "Games for Windows" logo, I have four games that have it: Bioshock, Oblivion, Sins of a Solar Empire, and The Witcher. I never really inquired why the logo was there. Honestly, I didn't care either. It's a non-factor to my gaming. As for GFWL....never messed with it.

I just find it annoying to have to go through its rather slow login so I can play each time I open a game. Twisted14Can't you use it OFFLINE, for quicker login?
What features? hahahahha. The only time I use GFWL online is to play SF4 online, other than that offline...But then there is no point to GFWL because you don't have access to the features of it offline.

My problem with it was that it was a huge hassle. I only needed it for GTAIV and it failed to update the client, and the game rendering me unable to save my games and GTAIv effectively unplayable for months.
Why don't game companies just get together and create one universal ****ing application that stores all kinda of different data and stuff? Geez I don;t need 20 extra programs installed just to save my games - or hell just to PLAY it, or to play multiplayer, or whatever.
That's why I stick with Steam as much as possible.

Offline doesn't work for some (maybe all?) titles. I know that for Gears of War, my save information was all saved online. I think Fallout 3 might be like this to. The load game buttons are not able to be pressed until it finishes loging into GFWL.
I might be wrong, but this is what I remember.
Yep, I remember when I bought Universe at War the game used GFWL and came with a free trial period. I activated my trial period and found out that no one used the multiplayer that required the gold subscriptions. Luckily people did play the multiplayer on the game that didn't require a gold subscription. I've never had any problems with it. Granted I don't really see the point in it other than for achievements that go to your Xbox live gamer score.Part of the reason it isn't the norm for games to have it is because originally it was microsoft's way of charging for multiplayer. Probably because it add zero value to the game.
Steam at least has some good deals and fun community. GFWL just looks like a crappy console application that hinders your gaming.

Actually what GFWL does is shove save games & DLC into a sub folder (sometimes hard to find) that can only be accessed by the game when GFWL is logged in. On some games it is easy to bypass this by moving games to a game recognized location (eg %DOCUMENTS%\My Games\Fallout 3\Saves instead of %DOCUMENTS\My Games\Fallout 3\Saves\[GFWL User ID]) and then either playing offline or disabling GFWL [For fallout 3 you can just search fallout3nexus.com for a disabler and do it that way]. The reason save games seem to "disappear" on people w/ GFWL games is because they have either gone offline in GFWL or gone online after being offline - this kicks in the redirection of the games save feature. My main beef with GFWL is that A) it isn't really needed and adds another layer of annoyance to some games (DoW 2), and B) It has a history of not performing well during update processes. As a side note: Microsoft didn't try charging for MP with its first iteration of GFWL - it just locked many MP features behind the Gold level pay wall. If you were a GFWL Silver member [free] then you had access to only basic MP match search options [I think it was auto search only, no custom search], no ranked matches, etc.Microsoft hasn't given up on Games for Windows LIVE yet, and if anything they are now supporting simple Games for Windows more with their new digital download site. However, it never took off in the way Steam has done because the implimentation of the GFWL service was very patchy, and caused quite a few problems for some people. Personally I've never suffered any problems with it, but I can imagine that if I did I would be singing a different tune.

How about no universal application? The computer itself does well in storing "all kinda of different data and stuff". Content delivery systems made PC gaming worse.

visceron
I use it to text message friends and family when the message isn't important. It's easier for me to log into a gfwl game and type it out with a keyboard than use the number pad on my phone.
