Because it's fast as ****. And sometimes I just want to run around super fast with a rocket launcher.

I didn't like Quake. Too pixelated for me. Plus you're lucky to get 20 fps with the latest and greatest hardware of the time (prior to 3dfx). I liked GLQuake running accelerated with a Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo. ;) But, I loved Quake 2 which I still play on my netbook.

This. I also loved UT2k4 for the same reason. I really want a NEW game to take these gameplay elements and evolve the genre. I'm hoping Tribes: Ascend will at least fill the current void a bit. I haven't played it, but it looks fast-paced, and movement is a skill. I'm kind of tired of these realistic shooters. Movement always feels clunky and hampered.

1. Requires skill of true warrior.

2. Requires thinking of a chess player if you're playing duel with the best.

3. Clan arena gametype is just so amazing, like I wuv it.

4. Really shows huge difference in skills.

5.Really big manuevering, you need to strafe jump to get speed in duel and CA.

Which "Quake" is the topic about:

Quake
Quake II
Quake III Arena / Team Arena
Quake IV
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Quake Live (updated free-to-play version of III)

or the series in general?

My favorite might be III but I've had fun with each one.

This topic is about the first Quake, based on his previous topic:P

There's nothing to dislike about this game. Everything is perfect.

id HAS to get Trent Reznor back on board for Quake V, his music and sounds for Quake are incredible.

I remember running Quake shareware in 1996 on an Intel 486 DX2-66 MHz PC with only 8MB ram and a 420GB hard drive in DOS (outside Windows 3.11) and it wasn't very pretty. I later got to see it running on a Pentium 120 and it looked so much better - simply due to it being a playable framerate :) At least the CD soundtrack was pretty interesting on the 486.

Been playing since '96 but I still play the game to this day because it has no unlock type things. Fighting over weapons imo is the best way to do it.

If Call of Duty, Battlefield and Team Fortress 2 didn't have reward/unlockable systems, I suspect they would have a much smaller player base. Quake needs none of that. The satisfaction of having improved and watching the literally spectacular results of that improvement is more rewarding than any badge or experience point or new gun model can offer.

It's incredibly fast, requires a LOT of skill, and is relatively simple without all of the random perks/classes that are in a lot of games that are coming out today. Nothing feels the same, except possibly Sauerbraten.

Unless you're playing a chess mod or something or are playing a game with extensive use of real time arbitrary physics calculations and are trying to determine the optimal trajectory for a piece of debris to fly through an enemy spawn as you figure out how to collapse a tower in a way such that it hits a fuel tank to cause a piece of debris from a nearby building to follow said trajectory(RF3 reference :P), then not quite I'd say. Muscle memory is very important for games like Quake and Half Life 1, and to a lesser extent, games like CS, COD, and HL2DM. Now I don't think that's a bad thing, but the only people who really have good opinions of such games are those that are particularly skilled, and that's not really fair to the vast majority of FPS players. For example during more casual matches in HL2DM I can enjoy myself, but occasionally I run into someone who is so good that I lose the motivation to play the game because the game doesn't present me with a way to really counter his skill with my mind.

Nah with quake it is all about planning. My cousin for instance knew all maps and all the logical routes people would take to get from one place or another. Many times when I faced him as I exited a corridor a rocket literally blew up in my face, he had just predicted when and where I'd be.

Gameplay, there's just something about it that makes it such a smooth experience, not just fast, more so than UT, it always was 2nd place for me, right after Quake.

What are you talking about? Go play duel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6NuMyXw1Hs#t=24m50s I've lost in duel matches against people much worse than me due to lax of experience, by worse I mean their lg is like 29 while mine is 40. Except my item timings are off, predictiable movements etc.

The engine is very fluid and the controls really responsive. Plus the game is balanced and the maps are well layed out.

I never really liked it, and yes, I played it around when it came out. Main reason was the drab atmosphere and environments. It was an extremely important FPS game for many reasons, but I never got to enjoy it as such.

The multiplayer has a very high ceiling skill/knowledge requirement thus making it very competitive and challenging.

Plus its fast as all hell, talk about adrenaline rush.
