Why didn't Dark Reign (9.2) enjoy the same level of success that Starcraft had?

This game came out a full year before Starcraft, had just as much depth, was well received and generally regarded as one of the best sci fi rts games of the 90's by those that have played it. So, why didn't it achieve the same crazy level of success as Blizzard's game?

Possibly because it borrows a lot from Command and Conquer not only in gameplay, but in setting and interface. While StarCraft's gameplay also borrowed from other games (i.e WarCraft), it offered three, really different, well balanced races, as well as an interesting new sci-fi setting. This is, by all means, my personal hypothesis.

Yup that is a pretty valid reason, this is the first time I have ever heard of this game myself. The one thing that always bugs me about games on the PC is no developer pushes their product. How can I buy a product that I don't even know exists ? This is one of the reasons Starcraft 2 has done so well, you can't move on the net without being deludged by articles, news stories and opinion pieces on starcraft 2.

I don't think he was denying that. But you got all these kids who say they don't like RTS games asking if they should get SC2. That kind of stuff, it's so popular people think they have to play it just because it's SC2!!!

If I recall correctly, it was way too slow and felt a lot like too many pieces were glued together without too much consistency.
